Default What's my BSR worth?

I need to put this up for sale, but I'm having a hard time putting a fair current market price on this one.

It has a 5" barrel, chambered in 38 S&W(38/200 NOT Special) and a well worn patina finish. I'm not finding many of these on the current market and none in this condition.

It has a US acceptance near the lanyard swivel, but no British markings that I can find. (I'm not sure what that stamp behind the cylinder release is). I thought maybe it stayed in the US as a plant guard gun or something, but it has an import stamp.

What do you guys think?

That’s the Canadian broad-arrow-in-a-C military property stamp on the frame behind the cylinder release.

Its Canadian service also explains the absence of British post-war proofs. You don’t show the top strap. Does it have the UNITED STATES PROPERTY? A BSR at that pre-V serial (early 1942) should be lend-lease, but there were still some direct Canadian contracts.

The prominent importer stamp doesn’t help much

I’d put a potential price somewhere in the 300s.

That's great info Absalom. Thanks!

Canadian contract makes sense. It does not have a US Property stamp, just the flaming bomb.

If it helps I purchased an Australian pre-Victory with an import stamp and non matching grips recently for $255 all in. If the grips on your revolver are matching it should be worth a bit more.

Be aware that Chief Dave is on a mission to ruin the prices on these by talking about his $255 catch

That is in no way typical. I paid $375 a while ago for an FTR’d Australian with Vega stamp and mismatched stocks and consider the gun well worth the money.

Yours still has the original brush blue finish, although time has degraded it significantly into patina, which does reduce its appeal. All matching numbers including on the right stock would certainly be a plus.

I assume you have ascertained that the chambers were not converted to .38 Special by reaming at some point? That happened to the majority of these, was usually not marked in any way on the gun, and would also reduce its collector value.

If it is all-matching and unconverted, I’d probably put 350 on the gun, but be prepared to drop if nobody bites after some time, but not too early.

These are niche collectibles. Not too long ago a member here offered a BSR version for sale at 595 which I would have happily bought at that price, but I never got a chance to see it because he got impatient after just a day or two and started dumping the price, selling it quickly at 400. I saw his WTS post a few hours later

Thanks Absalom. I'll keep that in mind.

It is indeed all original, the cylinders are not reamed and I have shot 38 S&W through it. Quite a pleasant round actually. Much lighter recoil than 38 Special.

Fairly typical for me but I've been accused of squeezing a nickel until the Indian is riding the buffalo. I've got a few good buys at gun shows however the bulk of my collection has came from online auctions. It never ceases to amaze me how many sellers don't know what they are selling.
