1917 45 DA Question
I found a 45 DA in a local pawnshop today. It's been totally parkerized-even the trigger and the hammer. The grips are not original and someone decided to drill and tap the topstrap and there are two screws protruding about a 1/4 inch from the holes. They turn easily and could be removed.
There is something I could not read (poor light) stamped next to the serial number under the barrel (maybe an import mark?).
They are asking $1100, which is of course a ludicrous price.
That said, the action seems sound and it might make an interesting project gun if I could get it for a couple hundred. What I am worried about are the two holes in the topstrap. Do the two screw holes pose an aesthetic problem or a structural integrity problem?

If the screw holes are small, like those for a scope, it's an aesthetic problem not a structural Integrity problem. But if you realistically think that they're going to come down to a couple of hundred dollars, I think you're dreaming. They obviously think they have a gold nugget and not a lump of coal.

As Guy said, it depends on the size of the screws. Visualizing what you describe I can picture it priced at about $350 and sitting awhile at that price.

Yeah, $350 would be tops for that abomination. $250 may be more realistic.

I kind of like the way it looks. The parkerized finish makes it look like a Victory on steroids. I would have to locate a set of the period appropriate grips though. Wiregrassguy may be right to conclude that it will be difficult to explain to the pawnshop staff that they are off by $850 on the price.

Too great a gap between what they want and what you want to pay. They must have a reason for their ridiculous price (once owned by Billy the Kid?) I'd pass on this one but keep shopping the LGS for another project gun.
