Default ?? Do J frame grips fit an I frame ??

I have a 32 long ctg, it’s a shooter not collecter. The black plastic grips are to small for me. Will J frame grips work? Is this gun considered a round or square but? Any help here is appreciated

The S&W J frame Target stocks will work with all configurations.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! All I frames were round butt...some may argue about the Regulation Police, but the basic shape was round. You can fit any J frame grip that encloses the frame on an I frame. Magna J frame grips will extend below the bottom of the grip frame and must be cut down to fit. But that won't help your issue. You need extended grips and combat, boot or target grips will fix your grip size issue.

The I grip frame is about 1/8" shorter than the J; most J stocks will have the stock pin in a correct position to fit, but the bottom of Magna stock panels will overhang that far.

As mentioned by LEO918, the 'J' target stocks will work, and they 'feel' close to the size of K frame magnas in your hand. That's exactly what I'd want if I were in your shoes.

Any of the J-frame grips made to completely enclose the grip frame (regardless of its shape) will most probably work with your I-frame. They will "index" on the arched portion at the top of the grip frame opening and the pins at the bottom of the grip frame, both of which are the same on both frames. You may wish to "glass bed" the grip frame of your revolver into a specific set of grips but I didn't find it to be necessary when I went through this procedure. BTW, the old Herrett grips work well for this as do the old discontinued Mustang grips.

Alan,

I or J frame size does not determine Grip frame or stock size.

Pre model 1953 Transitional and Improved I frames, and Baby J frames have the same size grip frame lengths (and small trigger guards).

Model of 1953 New I frames and New J frames, again both have the same size NEW 1/8" longer round grip frame length and larger egg shaped trigger guards.

There are two I frame and two J frame grip sizes. I and J frame stocks are the same size for the same vintage.

1. Before 1953 and with 5 or more screws (back to 1896 for the I frame), the I and J frames and stocks are the same size.

'Mini' diamond Magnas were used on I and J frames after the demise of the 'rd top' Service grips of pre war style.

Pre war, post war, and Improved I grip frames (and Single Shots), and the Baby J grip frame up to 1953 are the same size and interchangeable, whether ‘mini’ Magnas or the 'rd top' Service grips of pre war style.

2. The Models of 1953 New I frame and New J frame grip frames and stocks to the present with 4 or less screws (until the demise of the NEW I frame Jan 1961) are also the same size, both 1/8" longer than the pre 1953 RB stocks.

The 1953 I/J square butt grip frame never had square corners like K/N frames; they have very rounded corners.

Visibly they can be distinguished as shown below on this Improved I frame top, and Model of 1953 New I frame bottom, and by the curved lower checkering border and difference in un-checkered wood below the checkered area, mini Magnas on top, I & J frame Magnas bottom:

Factory grips that will fit the I frames from 1896 to 1953 and round butt 'Baby' J frames 1950 to 1953:

Any factory (including current production) or custom, I or J frame grips will fit. The locating pin in the I & J grip frames is in the same place. Of course any J frame grips that do not enclose the butt will overhang the I grip frame by 5/32" and leave a gap.

Regulation Police extended square butt I frame grips will work on the rd butt I frame with just a little wood trimmed out of them where they cover the bottom half of the backstrap, shown in the following two photos.

Regulation Police I frame square butt grips. Between c. 1920 and 1929 no medallions were used:

This shows special grip frame for Reg Police grips; notice the notched area on the bottom half of the grip frame backstrap:

Modified RP grips to fit round butt:

These pre war 2 screw extension target stocks will fit all pre 1953 I frames and pre 1953 round butt ‘Baby’ J frames:

J frame post war target grips shown in the smooth version below will fit perfectly on your gun and actually are a better choice for shooting. They are easy to find, most are checkered, and they are cheaper than the pre war I frame target grips for your gun:

These are modified Post 1953 I/J frame Target stocks.

Early combat stocks w/medallions and smooth:

There’s also these combats, checkered:

Or smooth:

And these:

Aftermarket that enclose the butt will work well:

In addition to this forum's classified section, grips can be found on E-bay and Gunbroker.
