1905 M&P rescue project questions
Pics' of my 1905 HE 4th. chng. #357530...1921..likely.bought it cheap,rather rough, cyl. would not turn easily,only 5 holes would load. finish rusty. Well, clean and polish yoke and frame. small file and hand work where it was dropped, adj.cyl. end play. Mothers mag polish,and we end up with a great accurate shooter. Numbers on RH grip probably match. they fit great,but the pencil number on RH is hard to make out.penmanship was bad. several #'s are there,probablly correct.can I do anything to bring them out,or,preserve them? all other numbers match. Bore and cyl holes perfect..almost passed it, glad I didn't. Got most of repair ideas from this forum.Thanks

I don't know how to make the numbers on the stocks any easier to see, but I know for a fact those numbers will completely disappear if you soak them in mineral spirits. Heard that from a friend.

As penciled numbers from that era go, those actually aren’t bad at all. Try different angles of high-intensity flashlights; that might make the digits come out clearer in photos. As for actually trying to “enhance” the writing, I’d recommend against any experiments; document the numbers and leave them alone.

Don't know what you can do to preserve the pencil numbers other than put the stocks back on and don't rub the pencil area. As to reading them, I've found a bright light and some magnification with the stock held at an angle will allow accurately making out the numbers. Good luck.

Hmmm, I'm finding this one quite interesting and I think I'll open another thread as to why... but I thank you for listing the entire serial number -- this is how I now know that your project gun is 265 digits later than my family heirloom.
It seems to me that those are long odds on a pair of 97 year old revolvers!
Mine is the only firearm I own that has been lettered. It's safe to say that yours shipped either on the very last day of May 1921 or it was shipped in June, 1921.

On my list is 3544xx which shipped in 11/20. I also list 3608xx which shipped in 12/20. I'd bet yours shipped in the same interval. 1920s grip penciled SNs are well known to be difficult (if not impossible) to read.

Ummm, while your two examples show us obviously that S&W shipped things not necessarily in order (which we knew...), would you really suggest that your two examples are a better indicator of a #357530 ship date than my revolver as explained in post #5?

No better, but no worse either. There are numerous examples of guns having nearby SNs which shipped months (or even years) apart from each other.
