Default Parts needed for 2nd Model HE 44 Special.

Hi, I came across this a few years ago & have not had time to chase down the parts. It is a S&W 2nd Model HE in 44 Special. It is all stock. The Frame, Cylinder & Barrel match. The Bore is Pretty Nice & the Chambers are Excellent. I think this is the parts I need:

All the side plate screws

a hand

& the rod that runs in the cylinder from the Locking Bolt to the Bolt......maybe called the "Center Pin"?

Any idea of a source? Reproduction/New Production would be fine except for the hand......which I think OEM would be much better.

Thanks for your help & I will post pics tomorrow.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! You should be able to find what you need at Gun Parts & Firearm Accessories | Numrich Gun Parts and eBay. Parts for a Model 1917 or Model 1926 should work fine. Screws, except the upper sideplate screw, can be purchased new at MidwayUSA or Brownells.

Thank you very much! I actually have been a member for a long time but was void long enough to loose my login stuff. I tend to stay away from Numrich as much as possible, many things I bought were poor quality repros or probably factory seconds, maybe they have changed. Thanks again!

Is the hand missing? If not, why do you need a hand? You may not.

If it's missing, to get the right one, the vintage of the gun makes a difference. Do you have a serial # or better yet, a photo of the inside of the side plate.

For screws or hand, on eBay and gunbroker do this search: "vintage gun parts smith". Any K or N frame pre war screws will be correct, but the front screw retaining the yoke will need to be fitted for length.

Since it has the "MADE IN THE U.S.A." stamp on the frame and the mushroom head ejector rod, it dates between mid 1922 and the late '20s. Oh, and it is wearing 1917 grips.

True.

And the new side plate hammer block was introduced right in the middle of that period on the N frame, except for the 1917 Army Model until 1933.

You guys got me fired up & I took a little time & tinkered today. I had somebody's old duty 28, used the cylinder pin/rod, it was too short to function correctly. Also the front plate screw did not have enough bearing surface to pull the yoke tight to the frame. Just some input.

A merchant on eBay named gparts (Bama Gun Parts) has a new old stock center pin for a 1917 that should work it is a tad over 4" in length. In fact, he may have all the parts you need.

Try swapping one of the other side plate screws. You may have to shorten it slightly if the yoke binds when screw is tightened.

I ordered the 1917 Rod & a set of "5 Screw" sideplate screws last night.......at least it shouldn't fall apart when you handle it & be able to open normally!
