Default Id S & W REVOLVER 5 screw /5 in. barrel

Hello I would like this revolver id'd and and idea if it may be worth anything. It is a 5 screw and has a 5 in. barrel. I could not find a model numer, but from reading your forum, I did find a serial no. It is diffcult for me to see, it looks like 800899. I took some pics but could not attach them. They did upload, I just do not know where they went. Thank you, nikki

What caliber is the gun? Should be stamped on the barrel. Oh and welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass!

Welcome! Have a look at this post for more information we need under the Hand Ejector section:

To IDENTIFY your Gun >

However, if the number is correct and has no letter in front, I would guess it will be stamped ".38 S & W CTG" on the right barrel and is likely a British Service Revolver from the early 1940s.

Welcome to the forum.

Value is based on what gun it is (rarity or not) and the condition. Judging condition without the gun in hand from photos on a computer monitor is difficult at best. A hands on examination is better.

Absent of that we really need close up well lit photos from numerous angles to first determine what gun you might have and then what condition it appears to be in. If you have photos on your computer or can load some from your phone to your computer, then it is a fairly simple matter to upload them to your post.

Start a post and then click on the (manage attachments) button below. It will bring up a screen that says (choose file) in the upper left. Click on that and it will take you to your photos on your computer. Locate the photo that you wish to show us and click OPEN. This will bring you back to the first window that opened and you then click on the UPLOAD button in the upper right. Do this for each photo that you wish to put in the post. I usually limit it to 3 at a time. You can always add a second post and add more.

If your photos are too large then you may have to resize them first but that is computer lesson number 2 and comes after you try the above. Should look like the following:

Thank you, it is a S&W 38 special. Looking at barrel, the place of manufacture and patent dates, the dates are: Feb 6,06 Sept 14 09 Dec 28,14. My eyes are not so, it is difficult to read such small print. Thank you all for the welcome. I hope to learn a few things. Thank you again. nikki

No problem, the Forum posting system is a little tricky but when you do it once it becomes easier.

The patent dates indicate it is a .38 Military & Police. Serial numbers in this era were sometimes deeply stamped, and a 3 can look like a 5 or 6 or 8. Looking at it with good light and from different angles may help. .38 Special versions of this model were being made along with the .38 S & W version.

Nikki, are there any letters in front of that 800 k number? Most of the guns in the early 1940s fall into that serial number range. And most of them were British service revolvers but chambered for 38 S&W not 38 Special. There were some 38 Special M&P in that time frame.

If the SN has no letter prefix, 800899 strongly suggests it is an M&P which shipped in mid-1941. And indeed it could have been chambered in either .38 S&W (if made for the British) or .38 S&W Special (if made for sale in the USA). That caliber information will be stamped on the barrel.

The numbers are hard to distinguish, I found another number on the gun, after reading "how to id your gun. The number is where the reg number is on the diagram picture that is posted. The number is 668008, and now looking at the butt of the gun, it looks like the numbers match.

I think that number would place it in the mid to late 1930s.

The closest SN I have listed to 668008 is 668632 which is an M&P that shipped on 12/30/38. However, during the Great Depression, serial numbers and shipping dates did not track together very well. So yours could have shipped any time within a year or two of that date.

Hello and Welcome nikki13.

Would you know if the finish of your revolver is original? Maybe you could get a close shot of the side plate area.

The humpback hammer is an interesting option that is not common. It is found more frequently on target guns than on ordinary M&Ps, and generally on those from the late 1930s. But it could have been added outside the factory somewhat later than that.

nikki - it is a matter of the shape of the hammer. It's a relatively rare option. The hammer and trigger appear to maybe to have been blued, which would normally indicate the gun had been refinished (reducing its' value). But, the other pictures do not look like an obvious reblue. I'm going to take a wild guess at values:

If not reblued, maybe $275-$300 (excluding the hammer)
If reblued, maybe around $200 (excluding the hammer)

The humpback hammers have been known to fetch $200-$300 by themselves!

Others with more expertise will chime in, i'm sure.

Jim

Based on the photos I would think that the finish is original however it looks like the side plate has been removed and not reinstalled flush. There may be some crud on the frame that is preventing the plate from seating well or it could just be the photo.

I would soak the gun in one of the many gun cleaning liquids for a few days (with the stocks removed) and then blow it out with compressed air. Any built up corrosion can be LIGHTLY rubbed with 0000 copper wool and then apply a thin coat of Renaissance wax. If the gun cleans up well and with the humpback hammer, I would put the value slightly higher at perhaps $350 to $450.

Prices tend to be regional but that is what it would bring in my area.
