Default My first Outdoorsman - with a crackerjacks treat

Once I discovered Heavy Duties, it was inevitable I would (want) (need) (require) obtain an Outdoorsman. So here it is. As they say, used but not abused. Serial number is s 93857, which puts it around 1954? Only 6039 pre 23s made. Paid $795 which is ok since it came advertised with cokes. Are these correct? They’re in real nice shape. If real, I did good. If not real, I have an OD with nice grips. Not the shiny blue finish. Interesting trigger shoe. Someone enjoyed this gun before I did.

Yes, those are N frame Cokes and that is a beautiful original gun. You did very well. Super deal. Congratulation.

Shoot it a few times with the trigger shoe and see what you think about it. Many people don't like them. "If" you are planning to carry this for woods walking or anywhere, think twice about keeping the trigger shoe on it. They stick out past the edge of the trigger guard, and have been knows to cause an accidental discharge (with injuries) if holstered incorrectly with the shoe in place. If it will go back & forth to the range in a gun case, it probably won't cause you any problem's.

That trigger shoe does it for me as far as a 1950s target gun. I have several. And yes the set screws leave a mark, dont care.

Doc44 is the resident Special Target Stocks expert, but I believe this style came first on the .44 Magnum in 1956, so the bad news is they are "incorrect" for this Outdoorsman. The good news is you have an $800 gun with a $300+ set of stocks, a nice discount. Enjoy!

While this is a K38, I too think the trigger shoe is apropos for a mid 20th Century target gun. To me, a Patridge sight gun probably isn't going to be in a holster much anyway.

I experienced similar good fortune many years ago---that time with a pre-war Outdoorsman----wearing a pair of gorgeous Roper targets---about which the ad said not one word---not one!!

I suspect you will remember this one fondly.

I don't know when your Outdoorsman was shipped (maybe later than the serial number suggests), but I doubt if the coke bottle stocks are original to the gun.

Thinnes, congrats on the find.

I have, quickly become a fan of your stories and finds, after reading through your first thread on your Grandfather's RM. Now, you have an OD, similar to my Grandfather's. I love that these 38/44's are the poor man's RM and can be shot.

Nice gun and flowers. The COKES are a bonus, you will enjoy the way it shoots. Give us a range report, Larry

The story is always out there about how unsafe a trigger shoe is for holstered revolver carry, yet I have never heard of an unintended discharge attributable to one. The purpose of a trigger shoe is for bullseye target shooting, and competitive bullseye shooters do not (or at least didn't) use a holster. Of course, it's the rare bullseye shooter today who uses a revolver.

Thanks for the comments. Those cokes really belong on a pre 29 though. I don’t understand why people separate the grips and the gun. The gun cleaned up very nicely. The gun was better than the pics. Will be headed to the range. Expecting zero recoil.
Next on bucket list: Pre-War HD, Pre-War OD and a triple lock....

Yup, Cokes in that condition can be sold for FIVE hundred bucks, easy - all day long.

So with that in mind if you sell them you got the Outdoorsman for $295 + the price of some period correct replacements.

I got my Model of 1950 44 special that way. Paid $675, put a set of magnas I had lying around on it then sold the Cokes for $500. I ended up with a nice gun for $175. That's how I roll.

Really nice gun, the stocks certainly add to it. Nothing wrong with the price either. I don't understand people selling the stocks or someone like me buying them because my gun has incorrect stocks.

I sold the Cokes, because
A) they weren't original to the gun - only available from S&W on Magnum calibers - not 44 specials, and
B) They were in nice shape - not quite 100% but very nice. I shoot all my guns, so they would either have gotten dinged up or left sitting in a box - neither of which would do me as much good as the $500 I got for them.

The guy who bought them had a nice Pre-27 that was of the right vintage to have been ordered with Cokes, but had incorrect grips on it. Since target stocks (at that time Cokes) weren't numbered to the gun, putting Cokes on it transformed it into a very nice period correct piece.

Hope that answers your questions.

Woe. Are they worth that much in K frame?

I've got a really nice set on my M19 but money is tight. Although in my case I think they are original to the gun..... And would be kind of a shame. They do feel pretty good too. I haven't actually used them for shooting yet. I've only had hogues on for shooting. The finger grooves irritate me a little though. Not QUITE in the right spot.

Another thing that strikes me is how similar these two guns look. I realize yours is an N frame. But my 6" Model 19 looks like just a smaller version of your gun.

And FWIW, mine was my Step Dad's used as a CHP officer in the 60's. And he did actually have a trigger shoe on his and holstered it. I'm not sure if it was super wise, but he did. Not sure how much he was drawing under stress, if at all. I think he was like in the engineering division and worked on cars or something. My Step brother said he was a traffic cop. Writing tickets and such. It also had Farrants on it, but I sold them to a member on here because at the time my Mom really needed money after he passed. And I didn't like them anyways.

That's a new one on me. The more common knock on trigger shoes is that they can slide down the trigger, thus preventing the trigger from traveling rearwards . . .

That trigger shoe.....back in the days before spring kits , we installed trigger shoes to give the impression of a lighter trigger pull for target work . Nice rig !

I still have trigger shoes on 4 of my revolvers dating back to 1967....never had any problems with slippage or holster carry...the model 58 in my avatar has seen a lot of holster carry, it came from a motorcycle cop with a trigger shoe and Tyler aluminum grip adapter, cutting edge for the day ! Sometimes I believe lots of problems are only theoretical problems and not real problems at all. I should have experienced a trigger shoe problem in the last 50 years if they happened outside of the theoretical realm of happenings.

ABPOS, the target stocks in your picture are not cokes. However, they do sell at an elevated level as compared to the average magnas. But, not near $500.

I put these on the Nickel.
