Default ??? Regarding 4" 38/44 Outdoorsman

Based on information in SCSW 4th, post war transitional 38/44 Outdoorsman with 4" barrel, while rare, does exist. The one in question has a Baughman ramp front sight. I checked the database and did not find any 4" examples listed.

Does anyone have one of these? Do you think a Baughman was a possible factory option in 1947? Am currently checking with seller to make sure the serial number in the ejector shroud matches the gun, but do not know that yet. Serial # is S70xxx. What else should I be looking for/at?

The one I believe you're referring to seemed off to me because of the finish on the front sight. I'm not an expert on if it should match or be slightly matte'd, but it just seems off. I'd definitely need a letter to verify before putting too much money down. I sold a post war short action 38/44 OD that was cut down for about $500 last year.

The front sight pin looks like it has been “touched” at least once. Grips are obvious later replacements. On the plus side it looks like it might have a pre-war Magnum barrel - can’t tell for sure because the pictures are so fuzzy.

Yes, the pictures were of very poor quality, to say the least. The gun just did not look right to me either. I think if the barrel is a .357 Magnum barrel, it would have the checkering on it, which it does not appear to have. I knew the stocks were wrong for the gun, but at least they looked to be in pretty good shape. Without a personal inspection, I reckon I'll pass on it. Thanks for your replies.

If it is the one I think it is - definitely re-blued and very, very strongly suspect that it was shortened. I'm okay with a nicely shortened Outdoorsman - but it has to be well done and priced accordingly. I gave a grand for this pre-war shortened one, but for me it is waaaay high on the cool meter.
