Victory grips (stocks)
I've seen perhaps a half dozen Victories with 20's style checkered grips. All were Navy's and none of the right grips were pencil marked with a s/n and the frame s/n's were all over the range. Is it possible that S&W sent a batch of these grips to the Navy as field service replacements?

Do you mean the 1920s checkered non-medallion style? They never let parts go to waste, but that would be more than a decade after these were discontinued.

Checkered, plain, non-diamond stocks were put on some Victories after they were modified for the civilian market. I suspect, but don't know for sure, that these were just the military panels that the seller had checkered. You can also buy plain checkered round top stocks right now from at least a couple of retailers who cater to the gun crowd.
