Default Pre-29 W/Culina Coke Profile Stocks

I had called Jennifer and asked if they could do anything in Tiger Stripe Maple. I shoot black powder muzzle loaders more than anything and have a couple stocked in Tiger Maple. She said they had tried something they called "Roasted Maple". This was the end result, she patiently "held my hand" while I waited, they are great folks to deal with.

I had asked John if he could apply "aqua fortis" to tiger maple in order to get the stripe effect we use on rifle stocks. He did not want to fool around with nitric acid but mentioned he had tried to roast maple in order to get the grain to pop. I was very pleased with the results. We apply a solution of aqua fortis made from nitric acid and iron filings to a gun stock that is nearly finished with final smoothing, at this time an alcohol based stain may also be applied or a tannin solution. Then heat is applied to the wood after it dries, the grain pops out as the heat is absorbed by the wood, takes a good bit of heat you have to watch the fine edges or it'll scorch. I'm in the final process of finishing a rifle and will be using that technique, afterwards you can start putting on coats of whatever you prefer, boiled linseed, Tru-Oil, I'm gonna try Tung Oil this time.

How about a thread on your rifle stock? Showing the steps along the way. You would have an audience of at least one!

Firearms & Knives - Other Brands?

Beautiful grips too!

Lee, that would be too sticky! To get back to the original thread, yes, those grips are beautiful.
