Cool old gun...what is it exactly?
I put an ad in the local paper looking to buy old Smiths and got a call from an old gent and I went to his house. I wasn’t able to take any pics of his gun, but I scribbled some notes.
Blue
1 line address
44-40 ctg. on right side of barrel
5 screw
Sn 50162 matching on butt, cylinder, and under barrel
Smooth trigger, smooth front and back straps
Can’t recall sights - front sight looked like it was pinned on backwards- unusual
N frame
No triple lock
I’m guessing I was looking at a .44 special, second or third model? It was in nice shape. No rust. Some spots and nicks. Very nice bluing.
He did want to sell it but didn’t know what to ask. He was gonna ask one of his buddies. I told him I’d try to figure out what he had.
So... I would like to buy it. Your thoughts on what it is and what I should tell him and what I should offer? Thanks

Do you recall if it had an underlug? The second model does not have one. The third model does have one. .44-40 2nd and 3rd models are pretty scarce.

If it had a shrouded barrel, it is a 3rd Model Hand Ejector, chambered in .44-40 instead of .44 Special. At SN 50162, it should have a serrated trigger, but never say never.
A 3rd model in .44-40 would be a rare piece.

Well I found a sn above the ejector rod on the barrel bottom, so no underlug.

That makes it a 2nd model. What barrel length?

Terminology issues here. The 2nd Model has an exposed ejector rod and there is a lug in front of the ejector rod knob that holds it in place. The 3rd Model has a shroud encapsulating the rod. Since you have a serial number under the barrel it must be a 2nd Model.

SCSW says only 565 were made in 44-40, and any caliber other than 44 Special will be worth 75-100% premium. Barrel lengths other than 6 1/2 inch have a premium as well.

Lug vs shroud. Got it now. Thanks. I’m thinking the barrel was 6, 6.5 inches.

It would be 6 1/2".
And you really want to pursue that one!
