New to me 1905 target
Well I certainly can not compare my new gun to the other awsome threads of lately (38/44 super kings, engraved pre 27) but after spending over 3 hours cleaning almost 100 years of gook of it I wanted to show her off. It came from Oklahoma and being serial 403011 its from about 1922. I cant help but think it was part of some Wild West times in its life. It has a lot of carry wear but all numbers match including grips and its still tight and works very well. I took it to the range today and it shoots like a champ so for under $500 I dont think I can complain. I just love shooting woth a long action it just feels better to me! Anyhow just a few pictures of my new toy that I can shoot at the range as much as I want without worrying about any more wear showing on it.

That's what I would call a nice honest revolver. All steel and wood, no plastic or aluminum.

The grips are beautiful , the screws are unmolested. Target model ... the price ...you are indeed fortunate. Feel free to enjoy my great envy.
And furthermore - Wow!

You are correct about the 1922 dating for your 403011. 4037xx shipped in 6/22. From that SN it should not have the MADE IN U.S.A. frame stamp. Everything appears original.

Very nice! I picked up one of these recently. Super accurate and the smoothest action I have ever felt.

1905 Target My Version.....
It does have the sweetest action of any K Frame I own, & Ralph is correct. The humpback definitely adds cool factor.
It is an outstanding shooter.

Thanks for all the positive posts. Sure do wish mine had a humpback hammer! I have yet to purchase a revolver with one installed. The newer short action may be faster but I as I said earlier I prefer the long action "feel". How does shooting with a HBH feel compared to the 2 different styles? If anybody is able to put the "feel" into words?

Put the feel into words, huh? Damn, you're hard to please!!
You want feel into words? Try this: (You'll have to apply some imagination---and imagine some enthusiasm though, because these words were written by S&W for public consumption; which makes them a bit stuffy.) "A redesign of the hammer has accomplished surprising results. It consists of simply reversing the conventional concave shape. The rolling contact thus provided permits the thumb to be placed as far over the hammer spur as desired without blocking the thumb when the hammer approaches its full cock position. The patented hump back design affords a constant or increasing leverage as the spring tension increases and the power of the thumb lessens. It renders the act of cocking far easier than with the conventional hammer."
See----like I said----stuffy. Try this: The hammer was designed to enhance single action, rapid fire----and it does just that----and looks cool to boot!!

Very nice!!! I would definitely like to pick up one of these. I love admiring all of the mint S&W's that get posted on here but as far as I'm concerned the ones with good honest wear are the ones that stir my blood especially when there's some hint to their history.

Nice find, daddio--
The forumites who go by catalog designations might say yr revolver is an M&P Target, because the factory stopped using the "1905" designation around WWI. Technically, it is probably a 1905-4th change if it has the same internals used from the mid-20s into 1944 when the hammer block safety was redesigned to operate from the rebound slide.
My suggestion would be to shoot it with target wadcutter ammo & enjoy it, as it should last you indefinitely.

I was extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to purchase this from a forum member. The Humpback Hammer is what really drew me to the gun. And I wasn't disappointed.

The titles of these old guns are just too darn long!! I guess I was trying to shorten it a bit when starting this thread. I think the gun is technically a " Smith & Wesson Target model .38 Military & Police Model of 1905, 4th change". Now that is an entire sentence to just place a name on the gun. Things were a lot slower back then and I believe they just referred to it as a .38 military and police or .32 military and police so they would know what your talking about. Even Colt had some rather long names back in the early 1900's also. We shorten "Officers Model Match" down to OMM now.

If we really wanted to start a riot, I suppose we could refer to 'em as pre-war K-38's.

Great gun, I have an affinity for the 1905 Target models. To me they are perfectly balanced, smooth actions and a joy to shoot! Whenever I shoot mine I think about the great craftsmen who built them.
