Vintage Facncy Handle Thread--Grips or stocks if you are a purist
I believe it was Gen. Patton who popularized "Pearl handles", but I think this trend started long before him The part of the gun that stuck out from the holster was the grip frame. Aside from carved leather adding some 'rims' was a way to place yourself above the riff-raff that only had factory wood to display.
My introduction to aftermarket grips came with my first Wof & Klar 3rd model 44. l It came with "jigged bone" grips--an inexpensive alternative to stags. These are literally caved cow bone made to look like stag. They must have been really popular at Wolf & Kar as it seems that about three-quarters of the 3rd models I've had came with these grips.
Shown below are two jigged bone variations:
First, the standard W&K version on a 3rd model 44 carried by two different police officers in Kilgore, TX over a 20 years spread. At the time a very wild oil boom town.
Second, is jigged bone grips with Rhinestone insets. These came to me wearing a 5" Triple Lock. I have never seen another set like them
Hopefully, some other forum members can show theeir 'fancy handles'.

The jigged bone grips on this circa 1970 Highway Patrolman make the gun look older than it is, which I like.

Patton didn't popularize pearl handles, he thought they would be found only on a pimp's gun. His registered magnum and his SAA wore ivory.

I quote Geroge C. Scott as Patton: "They're ivory. Only a pimp from a cheap New Orleans bordello would carry a pearl handled pistol. " P.S. Cool jigged grips.

IIRC, the original quote was "New Orleans Pimp"

Here is a set of "fancy handles" on a Wolf & Klar 5" 38/44 Heavy Duty that was factory modified to target. They are similar to the second set but instead of Rhinestone inserts they have a set of early gold medallions. They look good on the Heavy Duty but really need a Triple-Lock to do them justice.

OK, so I guess I can throw a little more gas on the fire.
As requested, first up is Mother of Pearl on a 32 Top Break.
Next, is vintage stags on a Registered Magnum carried by FBI Agent Arilin Jones at the Pittsburg office. The grips came to me with the gun.
Lastly--and please forgive the non S&W firearm--I know these existed on 1917s and Victories but this is the ONLY set I have ever been able to lay my hands on. "Sweetheart" grips carved in the field and placed over a photo from home. Often made form broken aircraft windshields.

I DON''T KNOW IF THESE QUALIFY AS TRULY VINTAGE.....
THEY ARE "PRE-BAN" SAMBAR STAGS BY EAGLE GRIPS. IMHO, BEING HARVESTED BEFORE THE BAN, PLACES THEM IN A DIFFERENT ERA....
IN ANY EVENT, HERE THEY ARE ON A PAIR OF M629s.....

OK, OK. I apologize for miss speaking in my OP. It was really the press that popularized Patton's "pearl handles". I do not know how many times Patton corrected them, but the label endured. I just wonder if some folk aren't jealous because they diddn't have a 'pearl handled' cap gun as a kid.

I WASN'T A PIMP AS A KID, (NOR AM I NOW) SO I NEVER CRAVED A PEARL HANDLED CAP GUN......
I AM A HUGE FAN OF GENERAL PATTON HOWEVER, AND I DID NOT APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENT. I DO ACCEPT YOUR APOLOGY, AND I BEAR YOU NO ILL WILL.......
AN UNCLE OF MINE FOUGHT IN THE AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT ON SICILY, AND UP THROUGH ITALY UNDER PATTON......
PATTON'S SON, A COLONEL, WAS THE COMMANDER OF K TROOP, OF THE 11TH ARMORED CAVALRY REGIMENT, IN VIETNAM. THEIR AREA OF OPERATION WAS III CORPS, WHERE I SERVED IN 1968-1969.....
HIS STANDING ORDER TO HIS TROOPERS WAS, "FIND THE B******S, THEN PILE ON". THE APPLE DOES NOT FALL FAR FROM THE TREE. RUMOR HAD IT THAT HE CARRIED ONE OF HIS DAD'S GUNS INTO BATTLE. I CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF HIM ONCE, RIDING SHOTGUN IN HIS COMMAND JEEP. HE WAS WEARING A LEATHER FLAP HOLSTER. I COULDN'T TELL, AT A DISTANCE, IF IT WAS GI ISSUE---NOR COULD I VENTURE A GUESS AS TO WHAT IT CONTAINED.......

And, a little more fire to the fuel but I'm getting down to the bottom of my stash:
A "Baby" Chief wearing smooth ivory.
A Triple Lock wearing ivory with medallion.
And, a 38 M&P wearing Mexican silver and gold.

Nice "Stash" there Quinn!!
I wish they were mine, but no such luck- S&W factory original Tuskoid. Reports of a few in black but I've never seen one. Only seen 3 sets of white. They were a "plastic" type material.

I seem to buy the grips and then find a gun to put them on.
My favorite pre27
Harry Javis post factory engraved combat Masterpiece, one of only a few signed Jarvis smiths. I added the grips.
4" W&K shipped 3rd model 44spl, re-nickled, once owned by Hank Williams JR.
W&K 44spl 3rd model marked for Houston PD, HPD 38 on backstrap. Original nickle, redone.
Thanks Randy for starting the post.
Oh, here's a set of pearlies just for you and the good General.
And I'll bet even George would approve of these. Firey pearls on a 1st gen Colt SAA.

I am increasingly more in love with two different types of fancy stocks; a particular jigged bone pattern, and properly aged Dalbergia Nigra, aka Brazilian Rosewood.
As to the Jigged Bone, my best example is on my favorite Colt:
I just love this pattern. I would love to find this particular pattern for a S&W, but I just haven't managed to find a good example yet. I have one set, but it's super weird. They are extremely corrosive and I don't know why. When I put them on a gun they will rust the mainspring so bad it will snap.
I also quite like my 3rd or 4th favorite Colt (I'm not sure how to rank them, I *really* like shooting my King/Roper equipped Camp Perry model, and I love my CM McCutcheon factory modified Bisley).
This is a Christy conversion of some antique SAAs to .22lr. Equipped with Micro sights ranged with some notches in the front ramp. It weighs a ton, is an absolute dream to shoot, and I love the look of it. With the jigged bone on there, and all it's proto-single six ness, it's just peak 1950 to me.
As to rosewood.
This is where my virtual pre-war kit gun comes in.
followed closely by my two sets of non-relieved factory stocks. One for a K Frame, one for an N frame. On a 1958 pre-model 17, and a 1960 5" Model 27 respectively:
Don't get me wrong about ivory, I like that too, it's just so hard for me to acquire that I only have some few nice examples:

Shown here before, here’s a nice set of Sambar Stag grips with a very noticeable palm swell on each side. These appear to have never been fitted to any gun. Shown on my prewar Model of 1926 W&K. They’ve really taken on a nice “satin sheen” over the years

Here are a couple pairs of ivory grips that are interesting. The first pair is from Bill Jordan's presentation model 19.
This second pair is a scrimshaw pair of animals. One side looks to be a bighorn sheep, and the other is a bear.
