Anyobdy got a real good pic of Patton's .357?
All the ones I've conjured up on a search are kind of far away.... Just curious of somehow someone has a decent close up pic of that gun. I think it's a 27 with a 3.5" barrel. Eh?

A simple search will find lots of pictures, on this forum and elsewhere, of the gun, the order, the belt and holsters he used, etc. Patton's .357 was a Registered Magnum made well before the model numbers came along. One example: http://smith-wessonforum.com/lounge/...ghlight=patton

It sticks in my mind that soon after the movie came out I saw ads for repro "Patton" grips in one of the gun mags. I was tempted and didn't even own an N-frame then.

Sure they did. The one on top is Patton's, the one on the bottom was used by George C. Scott in the movie.

Hey Keith44spl, would you be so kind as to email me that pic. For some reason sometimes when I right click and save from this forum, it doesn't work. Grrrrrrrrr......
But that is about the best pic I've seen of Patton's .357. I wonder if he actually loaded and shot .357 or just GI .38......

I believe that as a general officer, Patton wouldn't have any trouble packing enough .357 ammo to take overseas.

You can't see the guns very well in this invasion picture at Sicily, but it's a good picture of my uncle who was Patton's jeep driver in North Africa through Sicily. I have a few images and Patton sometimes wore a single revolver, sometimes wore the pair, and sometimes was seen with a revolver and wood stocks.
ABPOS - Forgot to add that if you double-click on the picture, it will open in a new window and you can save that image.

I had a great uncle that was I think part of Patton's division and was a mechanic. In the war and his whole life I think.....
I don't really know any of the stories. My Grandpa Died in Normandy on the 27th of July, 2nd ID. Sgt. I wish I had a picture of while he was there. I have one of him and my Grandma at a USO dance.
The pic still isn't downloading properly. I tried your tip and it just made it all stretched out weird looking. Before it wasn't even showing up. There is something about this site that doesn't allow me to download pics from it to my computer for some reason.

One of Patton's drivers was from Alabama and had painted "War Eagle" on his jeep. Was this your uncle?

Actually he was born in Hurley, WI, enlisted for the duration in motor operations and was picked by Patton for reasons he never knew. He was reassigned after Patton lost part of his command briefly after his slapping incident. I believe the General had a few different drivers for the rest of the war once he regained command. The article was written in a local paper around July 1943. The other picture shows him with sachel, a bag, and the General's coat standing on the sidewalk in Italy. I have never found the newsreel the article refers to, but am still looking.
He donated his Army uniform and memorabilia to a small local museum in Hurley before he died, including what he said was a large Nazi flag that Patton ripped down from a government building in one of the towns in Italy and gave to my uncle. Of course back then, we never talked about the war. Too bad because he would have had fascinating stories to tell.

I believe it's sort of like an early tyler T grip. If you look at the picture of the guy holding his 2 revolvers, you can see it's still on the gun there. So I don't think it's a wall hangar.

Actually, there a three different items being seen in these pics. All pics of the gun show the early S&W grip adapter, which was an elaborate device mounted under and retained by the stocks. The pic of the gun depicting the initials in the stock show the gun mounted, right side, by a muzzle post and a hook under the rear of the trigger guard. The third picture showing the gun mounted on the left side with the description underneath, appears to be a secure mount around the trigger guard, probably from a mobile display.
I once saw Patton's .357 on display at a Birmingham gun show several years ago and it appeared to be securely locked into that display case, for obvious reasons. It was also displayed with his General Officer's belt & holster rig. Quite an impressive looking firearm, with all it's history!

That fellow in the video could not resist spinning the cylinder on Patton's S&W every chance he got. Wonder how many times he's spun the cylinder and snapped it into the revolver Hollywood style when the camera is not running?

I like the civilian verbiage in the news paper article saying that your family member was Patton's "Chauffer." No one ever chauffeured an Army jeep!!!

Here is a scan of Patton's order for the revolver from Smith and Wesson back in 1935
Here is a scan of DB Wesson's response to Patton
Here is the work order
I wish we had a better scanner handy when these were done about a decade ago. It is still pretty amazing how good these documents look after 75 years

. . . or even a closer upper, and while I am at it, I removed the competition.
That S&W Registered Magnum is quite worn, probably knocking a lot of the value out of it.

It's been over 20 years since I have been to the Fort Knox museum. At that time anyone could drive in. Is it more difficult to get through the gate today? I was in the area about 10 years ago, but I was too busy at the time to visit.

I was at Fort Knox about 20 years ago, when my youngest son graduated from boot camp there!! I toured the Armor museum then, and saw the Patton display. I believe that only one of his famous revolvers was in the display at the time, and there was a note that the other one was being cleaned or something. The display has been changed a number of times over the years, as the state of the art for museum displays has evolved. Today's museum displays are really heads and shoulders above the old school displays.
Best Regards, Les

My son went through basic training at Fort Knox back in the early 1990s. He destroyed his knee in the process, and that ended his Army career before it started.

Entrance to the Patton Museum is now through the Chaffee Gate on Bullion Boulevrd. (MP's can provide a map and directions) The gate to the museum parking lot that opened to US-31W has been closed indefinitely. The future of Patton's personal memorabilia is somewhat clouded since the Army closed the Armor Center at Fort Knox. Almost all the museum's exhibits were moved to Fort Benning, except for the General's personal items, which the Patton family had insisted stay at the Patton museum. That may change.
As an aside, General Patton was an accomplished sailor. You may note, he was assigned to Fort Shafter when he placed the order for his Registered Magnum. His mode of travel on that PCS was to sail, with his wife and family, his yacht to Hawaii, and, when transferred to Fort Riley, back to the mainland.
George S. Patton commissioned John C. Alden, one of America's greatest designers to conceive him a boat to be built by F.F Pendleton of Wiscasset, Maine in 1939, he had the ultimate ambition in mind:
"When the war is over, and If I live through it, Bea and I are going to sail her around the world."
She was built, and was christened the "When and If"

It's a kind of ugly way to diplay a revolver, but if it weren't nailed down good it would probably be gone in 60 seconds.

It wasn't until this thread that I discovered that the Armor Center was no longer at Ft. Knox. I was stationed there 1980-83.

60 seconds!!!!??? You're assuming the culprits to be turtles? Or even slower.

I have my doubts if anyone was seriously considering buying that particular revolver (with it's provenance) that they would consider that "honest wear" to be detrimental to the revolver's value! To me, it would be worth much less if it looked like a safe queen. That one has been there and done that, blood and guts and all! It won't likely ever be for sale anyway.

The last time I was at the Patton Museum (summer 2016) his Colt and his Magnum along with the gunbelt were displayed as shown in the video.
Another display contained the Colt Army Special he used to compete in the Modern Pentathlon during 1912 Olympics.
One item no longer on display was Julio Cárdenas' Model 8 Remington that jammed during gunfight at the San Miguelito Ranch. It had been displayed at the museums previous location on Old Ironsides Avenue. The exhibit stated that out of superstition General Patton never cleared the rifle.

That is how the Patton revolvers were displayed before the big restructuring of the museum.
Significant transformation began in 2005 with the recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission. As a result, the Armor Center and School relocated to Fort Benning to merge with the Infantry Center to form the Maneuver Center of Excellence.
Most of the exhibits, the tanks that were inside and outside the museum for many years were relocated to Fort Benning in 2011.

My family went on two car trips East; one in 1954 and the other in 1960. On one of those trips we went to West Point and toured the museum. Both of Patton's pistols were there at the time in a permanent display.
As a kid, I was suitably impressed.
