Who would do such a thing
I bought this post war M&P on the cheap knowing the barrel and grips were not correct and thought the finish was fair at best. I was surprised the finish on the frame, cylinder, hammer and trigger are very good or better which is amazing considering the poor quality of the barrel installation. And this person likely calls his/her self a gunsmith. Save for the barrel and grips all of the numbers match.
When I pulled the grips off the right panel looks to have 2 s/n's stamped 229787 in the normal random fashion at the top and 471391 in a straight line with all of the numbers evenly spaced.
The good news/ bad news is I found a near perfect sharp shoulder left panel but no mate.
Hopefully when I request a ship date Mr. Jinks will be good enough to tell me the original barrel length. To me the condition is good enough to restore it to original.
For the member keeping the S series data base the s/n is S919813.

I've got a spare right side sharp shoulder magna. It's not as pretty as the one you have, but if you were wanting to refinish one, you're welcome to have it free.
It's not chipped or gouged, but much of the varnish has worn off...and the medallion is showing some brass.

No, just got back from the skeet range so I was dressed up. Clean socks always make me shoot better.

To fill an order for a gun with Target grips, the Factory occasionally pulled the grips off a finished gun and put Targets on it and shipped it.
They would later reuse some of those takeoff grips. By the time they were reused, grips were being numbered along the bottom edge.

That satin post war blue is going to be a bugger trying to get the barrel to match. I bet it had a 4 inch barrel and somebody took it to gunsmith to make a carry gun out of it. Hope you get her back to normal. It is starting to look better already.

I would leave it how you bought it, especially if the price was right. It's never going to be original again, so why not keep it practical?
OK - I'd probably add a T-grip.

Looks like someone used a set of vice grips to put the barrel on. Hope they didn't damage the frame in the process. Let us know what Roy says.

If it was originally a 4" revolver I'll likely leave it as is, otherwise will be on the search for the correct length barrel. The seller claimed it was originally a 5 incher.

Id rather have a 2 with a weird obviously wrong barrel than a million times more common (around here, anyway) 4 incher. but I always liked stuff modified for use by people of the past to fit their specific needs.

Examples in that serial range had either 5" or 6" barrels, so it is likely the seller is correct. Many of them shipped in July, 1947.

With the work involved in replacing the buggered ejection rod and barrel, to me not worth the effort. Maybe keep on hand as a spare parts gun. Lucky for us 4” M&P revolvers are still common and relatively inexpensive

That's the first one I have seen with a sawed-off extractor rod. Were it mine, I'd probably try to find a period-correct longer barrel and a longer extractor rod for it.

I AGREE WITH WB. I WOULD RATHER HAVE A VERY USEFUL 2" FOR CCW, THAN SPEND THE TIME AND MONEY TO RETURN THE GUN TO ITS ORIGINAL LENGTH......
AFTER SPENDING THE MONEY FOR A JINX LETTER, AND FINDING AND FITTING A CORRECT LENGTH BARREL, YOU WILL STILL HAVE A MERE SHOOTER. IT WILL NEVER HAVE COLLECTOR VALUE, AND YOU WILL BE INTO TO IT FOR MORE THAN IT COULD EVER BE SOLD FOR......
SOOO, WHAT'S THE POINT ? ? ?

Likely it was an inexpensive gun when the work was done, and since the M&P was plentiful and cheap once, they didn't consider it hurting a collectable gun then.
I think it would make a great pack gun, or carry gun as it is, and probably would just enjoy it this way myself.

I like it, especially if the price was right. Maybe look for a correct ejector rod, or just leave it as-is.

A comment, then a question.
If it were my gun Id leave it as is, its a great working gun.
I always thought that Smith and Wesson revolvers that had the one 1 line address were pre WW II guns, am I correct?

No.
The 4 line address was ordered in 1948.

The 4-line "address" began on guns shipping in mid-1948. The one-line "MADE IN U.S.A." legend (not an address) began in mid-1922. The earliest M&Ps with the legend stamp were around SN 406xxx. Prior to that there was nothing stamped in that location. Some early guns shipped back to the factory for service after mid-1948 had the 4-line "address" stamped on them for reasons not completely known. Pictures of several examples of early revolvers with the 4-line stamp have been shown on this forum.

I'm in a similar situation. Found a cheap 1948 M&P with a mismatched 6" barrel. Like you said, it'll never be original again and it's a great shooter. I put a T-grip on mine.

Leave it like it is for CCW carry. It is not a target gun, but will make a good gun to pack in the woods. Just leave it like it is and enjoy it. JMHO

The stocks that came with the op's gun could be re-checkered and made to look pretty close to new by a person with checkering skills & tools. Imo this work could be done for less than the cost of replacement grips these days.
