Need Information for Revolver
A number of years ago I found an S&W revolver on a stream bank while fishing in a remote part of Alaska. It is a hand ejector, serial number 309129, 38 S&W SPECIAL CTG, 6 inch barrel, with fixed sight, a strain screw, lanyard swivel, and 4 screws. I would like help with any information pertinent to this revolver including what year it was made. Thanks.

Looks nice for one found on a river bed.
I would contact S&W customer service. They will tell you exactly when it was made and maybe more.

It's a Military & Police revolver from approximately the mid-1950s. It should have a "C" in front of the serial number. This variation is actually known as a 5-screw, with four side plate screws and a bolt stop spring screw in front of the trigger guard. It predates the use of model numbers by a couple of years, but some would call it a pre-Model 10.

Thanks for replying. Yes, it has a C in front of serial number. I can only see 3 side plate screws and one in front of the trigger guard.

Thanks. It was in a holster and may have only been there a short time. I've never fired it.

There is another screw under the grip.

Just out of curiosity did you make any attempt to return it to its owner? Contact local police to see if a gun was reported lost, that sort of thing?

C309129 should have shipped sometime in 1955.

Welcome! Good comments above.
It has what appears to be a set of aftermarket replacement stocks (probably Sile, made in Italy), and the butt swivel or lanyard ring on the bottom of the grip frame would have been an unusual addition although it looks to be a factory part.
Because of this and how you found it, I might be curious to get a letter of authenticity on it - this would tell you when and to whom it shipped, and if the swivel was original to the gun:

I would see no harm in reporting you found it to whatever law enforcement agency having jurisdiction where you found it (US Forest Service, AK State Troopers, etc.) - perhaps someone reported it stolen (not that you did that) and would like it back?
Also, someone else is going to write it so I will beat them to it - were there any bear claw marks on the holster? Plenty of members here like to discuss handguns for bear defense here . Hope this is helpful.

Looks as though that revolver was not lying on the river bank long enough to collect any dew.

I reported it after I found it. It’s been several years. At your suggestion I will follow up with police and troopers. I also requested history from S&W. No bear marks. I would have no problem in returning it to it’s owner.

If local cops had no report on it then you did what you could. Somebody lost it but apparently it wasn't important enough to file a report with the cops.

I'm just conjecturing here but I'd be willing to bet it was lost by a bush pilot or outfitter that was delivering clients to that location even though it really is a pretty small caliber for most critters roaming around the Yukon.

I contacted troopers today. There was no report on this revolver in their files.
