Collector value and effect of trigger job
I had a trigger job done on my 13-1 since it is a piece that I shoot often and carry while hunting. I wasn't worried about affecting the value based on the purpose of the gun.
Now I was wondering if I should have a trigger job done on my Pre 27 and how that may affect any collector value of the piece.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks

Just my opinion.....If I buy a gun as a collector, I don't want one that's been modified by anyone, for any reason.

He's right. If it is a collector piece,it isn't a shooter so there is no reason for a trigger job. Should be exactly as it left the factory. Once you start firing it it is no longer a NIB collectors piece.

There are trigger jobs and there are trigger jobs...
One that results in a 3-4 pound SA and 8-9 pound, smooth DA pull, I suspect most would comment "nice trigger" and not worry about any effect on value. A 1 pound SA pull with hammer push-off is an entirely different animal. If in doubt and value preservation is the main goal, best to leave the pre-27 trigger alone. Good luck in your decision.

Most Pre-27's I have ever handled didn't need a trigger job.

I was going to say what H Richard said. Pretty much every pre-27 or even 27 for that matter that I shot, had a great trigger. Now the Colt Python, while it's aces in single action, that stacking thing in double action, I'm not fond of. I'll be sending my Python out next spring for a trigger job to get rid of the stacking, value loss be damned.

For me, a trigger job, even a very well done trigger job, won't ever increase the value or the price I would pay. A poorly done trigger job will always decrease the price I would pay . . .

If it is a safe queen, you don't want to be cycling the action at all to keep the turn line discreet.

If done and documented by a well known S&W pistolsmith I don't think it would increase/decrease value. Otherwise a substantial deduct.

Whether it would increase or decrease its value is an individual perception. But I am curious as to why you would want to perform any trigger work if you want to keep in in pristine collectible condition. If you plan to shoot it, it won't stay that way for long. I can see a possible benefit to performing a trigger job on a revolver which will see some use, but none at all for a gun which will be a safe queen.

Thanks everyone, I truly appreciate the comments.
The 13-1 is definitely a piece I will use a lot. Thus the trigger job made sense.
The Pre 27, while not going to be a safe queen, will get taken out once in a rare while. The trigger on it is just as one would expect for such a piece, very, very nice. Thus not much need. But the quality of the trigger jobs from this smith are absolutely first rate, so thus a bit of "temptation" and thus the question.
I think y'all basically confirmed what I was thinking in that with no real need, and considering the condition of the Pre-27, it really isn't something to bother with.
Again, thanks for the input.
