Default Four Four-Screw Forty-Four's

Here are four different .44 Magnum barrel lengths in my collection. I was able to acquire the 8 3/8" variation last weekend from a dear friend. He said that the case is probably worth more than the gun. It is a transition case. Since the 8 3/8" guns came out after the 4" and 6.5" guns, it was decided to go with the mahogany case for the long barrel, and the early latches and the early liners were used in that transition. There are less than 10 of these cases that are known to exist. I did not put all the tools in that case, but they are wrapped separately.

4"

5" (April 16, 1958 H.H. Harris)

6.5"

8 3/8" (April 1959, early gun with rare transition case)

Wow. This is outstanding! I have the 4" pre 29 4 screw in the black case and the 6.5" 29 no dash 4 screw in the clamshell case. I notice you don't show the bronze brush. Were those not standard with the tools. I have the brushes for mine...guess they could have been added later?

Very nice!!! Difficult to acquire a 44 Magnum of each barrel length with a 4-screw frame.

Default Four Four-Screw Forty-Four's

I really try not to ever post "off topic"; but, when I saw the thread title, this epitaph of Lester Moore popped in to my head: "Here lies Lester Moore, four slugs from a .44, no Les, no more".

Probably not...(smiling)

The range guns:
-1963 Model 52
-1960 Model 41
-1952 K-38 (14)
-Colt Gold Cup

I do need to pick up a .44 for the range. I’ll probably look for a 29-3 in the near future.

Really nice .44s, and a super nice alliteration in your subject line!

4 screw was a great era for S&W's.

Thank you Ben. The money expended? It is probably relative. Well, you have to remember, even though I just turned 50, I have been doing this for a very long time. I received my first gun in 1975 on my 5th birthday. When everyone else was buying skateboards, etc when they were 14, I had saved up $250 for my first S&W. How many 14 year olds wanted a 1950's 6" K-38

I bought the 6.5" gun in 1994 when I was 24, and it was $650. The 4" gun was $850 a few years later.

When I was in college, I remember seeing a NIB 6.5" 5-screw .44 Magnum and a NIB 4" 5-screw .44 Magnum at a gun shop in the early 90's, and they were both under $700. There was some guy standing next to me, and he told his buddy "$695!? Why would I spend that on an older .44 Magnum when I can get a newer one for less?"

I have all of the correct factory tools. Since they can damage the cloth, I usually keep the tools out of the boxes and stored separately.

That's just awesome. Missed it the first time, thanks for reposting.
I doubt I could keep them away from the range, but that's just me.

Outstanding collection, 4-screw! I have a couple of 5-screw .357s and some other various calibers, but only one 4-screw .44 Magnum. It's one of my favorite revolvers. Unfortunately it came with a later style mahogany presentation case instead of the blue/black pebble case. Perhaps one day I'll pony up and buy a proper case for it. Enjoy!

5 years....time flies since I posted this. I am not sure why "Photobucket" is watermarked across the pictures, but if you click on the picture, the word goes away.
