Default K22 Model 17

I have decided to get a K22 Model 17 as I do not have a .22LR revolver. In my looking I have seen them priced from $500 to $2900. The S&W retail price on a new Model 17 is $989. I'm more drawn to the older models (non-dash) which would qualify to be transferred on a C&R FFL. Some of the ones I seen are still in their original boxes and are priced higher which is understandable. I would like the gun to be more of a collector model which gets shot very infrequently. Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated? Thanks.

I suspect that you might want a K22,( 1957 and earlier) not one of the later Model marked 17s.(post 1957)(though when I was into .22 revolvers, I was perfectly happy with every model marked variation and dash number).
K22 or 17, 1k or less, should get you something nice.

If you don't mind spending 2k, a nice pre-war Outdoorsman would be worth consideration.

I picked up a 17-4, had 617's but like the 17 much better. It came with 2 other guns that I sold to reduce the cost to half the purchase price.

There are pros and cons to the different variations,
The Model 17 as a shooter is a quality arm throughout its evolution,
If you need to use the C&R obviously you need to look for one that shipped prior to this date in 1968 which would be an early 17-3 or any 17-2 or earlier version.

Early versions are more collectible and so usually fetch higher prices.
Be advised should something go wrong IIRC the factory will not work on anything made "Pre Model marking", also the older parts are more expensive and harder to find than the later ones.

If you find a reasonable dealer to do the transfer it might likely cover the price difference between a nice 17-3 or 17-4 vs a C&R 17-2 in same condition.

As a shooter the 17-5 and 17-6 are fine weapons as well but do not have the barrel set pin, they also have heavier barrel profiles.

All depends on what you really want and the deals you stumble on.

K848,781 is given as the year-end 1968 production SN. It is not that difficult to find a decent condition pre-Model 17 for $800 or less, but if you want a very high condition example, especially with box, papers, and tools, you might expect to pay up to double that.

All I can say is there are the investor grade K-22s and the ones you enjoy shooting. The former have prices reflecting their status, but the latter can be much more obtainable for we mere mortals. My personal 22 shooter grade revolver is a 1948 vintage K-22 (light barrel, narrow rib) and I seldom go to the range that it doesn't go with me.

If I were starting all over again, I might look for a Model 617 ND or -1 in good used condition. I figure I could carry and shoot it to my heart's content while showing very little of the wear and tear seen on a blued steel model. Any way you look, though, you can't go wrong.

Thanks for the input. A lot on information to digest and decisions to be made.
