38 Regulation Police/Nickel Ejector Rod
I have what appears to be a new in the original maroon patent box 38 Regulation Police, Serial # 43XXX. It has a nickel ejector rod. I have seen these before but can anyone shed light on the reason this was done. I have not seen this on any other Pre War Smith & Wesson Revolver.
Thank you in advance,
RV

Your 38 RP is from ~ 1937.
It's a little known phenomenon that we see on only late pre war and early post war .38/32 RPs.
I have not seen any explanation other than the usual for S&W oddities:
S&W never wasted anything! Meaning, in this case, the ext rods in nickel plate were plentiful in inventory while the blued rods were not.
They have not been observed on the short ext rods for the .38/32 Terriers with 2" barrels.

Here is a 32 RP with a nickel rod.
. . . but I assume that you have a blued 38 RP?

On the member side of this forum, Roy just confirmed his best guess is excess nickel rod inventory.
There aren't that many around.

Thank you all for the information. It is a blued gun and should be right around the 1937 date.
