TRANSITIONAL 38/44s
I just picked up the transitional 38/44 Outdoorsman (all original) to go with my transitional 38/44 Heavy Duty.
I had the Heavy Duty up for sale here a couple weeks ago, but thank God nobody wanted it.
It's nice to pull them from the safe occasionally and give them some loving.

Please pardon my ignorance here, I'm new to 38/44 ownership.
What is a "Transitional"?
Mine is a 1941 Outdoorsman.

I picked up a trans OD from a forum member a couple months ago.
It has a King cockeyed hammer and was converted to short action.
The gun below it is your garden variety prewar OD

The ribbed barrel and the long action hammer! It must be a hint of Registered Magnum. Love it!

After WW II commercial revolver production restarted with revolvers having some pre-war features (separate ejector rod end, etc.) and some newer ones (new-style hammer block), thus the "Transitional" label from collectors.

The guns after the war that continued to have long actions, but had S prefixes are referred to informally as "transitional" because they had both pre war and post war characteristics.
There's more details and not everybody agrees it's a good moniker, but in short, if the hammer is of the pre way style, and there is an S prefix in the serial number, it's transitional.
The term is used for both N frame guns and M&P k frames.
