Default Help to ID .38S&W HE

Got a .38S&W I'm having a bit of trouble identifying. I think it's a 38/200 commercial, as it has no lend lease or Brit marks, a "high" serial number 806879, and 6" barrel.

Last patent date on barrel is 1914. Marked 38S&W CTG and Made in USA on the right; Smith and Wesson on left barrel; and Sept 14 09 and Dec 29 14 on the top.

Gun is in fair shape and as I'm hunting for a .38S&W top break now I'll have two in that flavor of cartridge.

Am I getting this correct?

Here's some pics

It is likely an early .38/200 British Service Revolver, when they still had the commercial blue finish. For S $ W there was no commercial market for K frame .38 S & W revolvers at that time.

The stocks on yours are postwar Magnas; the originals would have been service style, checkered walnut with silver medallions.

Pretty sure that you have a five-inch barrel, not six.

You do indeed have a British Service model from mid-1941, pre-Lend-lease. It was military per the standard P proof on the butt, and almost certainly shipped to the British via the British Purchasing Commission.

The black-paint type refinish indicates it ended up in Indian or Pakistani service (unless the lighting in your pictures creates a really mis-leading impression ). It originally had the standard pre-war polished blue and small checkered service stocks with medallion.

Yours probably shipped in the July-August 1941 period, so it would be a pre-Victory M&P. It also was a little early to be a Lend-Lease revolver. Looks as if it had an interesting life.

Yep, that‘s just heavily worn blue; the angle of light in the other photos created the rough black impression.
