S&W Model 38
Just purchased a S&W Model 38, trying to date the serial # 161750.
Revolver is a little rough on finish but I plan on doing the cosmetics my self. Been wanting a Humpback for awhile.
All info and comments welcome.

Guesstimate of that old Bodyguard is about 1958-ish. The Bodyguard and the Kit Guns are likely the only 2 type j-frams I did not go out of my way to find. Not that I don't have any, just that I didn't intentionally go out on the hunt for them. Sal

Fine little pocket gun. It would be my second choice, a close second, behind the Centennial series.
Some people consider them ugly. I don't, at all.

I've got one that has a little history. In 1971 my partner and I were attacked by a druggie with a .22 RG. I went to the ground as I drew my 19. My partner didn't. He fired one round striking the guy in the heart. Fight over. He gave me the model 38 a few months later and I still have it.

Here is a pair of pre 38's. 90904 Shipped Feb 1957. Likely 91222 shipped 1957 as well. Of interest to me was that the 38 Chiefs Special Bodyguard preceded the steel frame Model 49 which has no pre model examples. Therefore, Air Weight is not in it original nomenclature as it had no steel frame model to compliment it.
Unlike many folks, I find the Bodyguard design very practical and carry one instead of a fully enclosed hammer Centennial design. As for aesthetics.. well it is a tool not a jewel.

Picked up my Model 38 yesterday, it locks up very tight, trigger and hammer also tight. If it wasn't for its mfg. date and holster wear, I would say it was not used very much. Super CC gun.
What power of ammo should I use in it ?

Mike, your photos are not loading up at this time. I even went directly to the link in another browser. Sal

tjtoolbox: nice acquisition!
I think it's cosmetically perfect and wouldn't do more than cleaning it.
Enjoy.

Yeah. Leave the finish alone is my vote. Congrats on the gun. She's a beauty!

Thanks I just found out today that my PB account, which just started working again a couple of months ago, was completely deleted. So I have no photos. It wasn't working for a couple of years and then it was.. now, since I would not pay the piper so to speak, it is apparently permanently gone. It must have been a glitch that brought it back to life.
