Please help date this Model 1905
Just picked up a Model 1905, 4th change, with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. The serial number is 1481xx - would love to know the date

It is not a 4th.
It is most likely a Mod 1905-3rd Change.
I have 1482XX shipped in Jan, 1910.

Well, "the date" can be had with a letter. A wild guess can be had considering 116420 was shipped June 20, 1910, and 238778 left on March 5, 1915.
Next we should probably send you back to the books where you'll find 148something is thought of as a 3rd change---and also thought of as being available with either a 4" or 6" barrel. Given a numbers matching 6 1/2" barrel on yours, we need to find someone who enjoys mysteries of this sort.

All numbers match on frame, barrel, and cylinder - I remeasured the barrel, it is definitely 6 1/2

2nd change was available with 6 1/2 inch barrel? Serial seems 2 thousand digits too high to be a 2nd change though. Mystery continues.............

Welcome to the Forum.
If the bore is good, should be a nice shooter.

Ralph,
They used up 6-1/2" barrels after they quit offering them in the catalog.
I have a 3rd Change with a 6-1/2.

The 6 and 1/2 inch barrel was cut after 1909, but they were used until used up. There seem to be quite a few 1910 guns with the longer barrel.

Here is 1481XX.
6-1/2" with dual caliber marks.
Also note the separate, case hardened knob that supposedly went away with the 05-2nd.
I opened this gun up to be sure it is an 05-3rd. It is.
All matching EXCEPT grips. It quite likely shipped with gold medallions.

Interesting thread. I have a 4" model with only the 38 spl caliber marking.
It is #1496XX. So a question for those with serial number reference
material, would this be a 1910 gun or maybe 1911? Thanks in advance
for any info.

#1496xx
From nearby SNs on my list, I'd say yours likely shipped in the early months of 1910. I show no SNs that high as shipping in 1909 and none that low as shipping in 1911. If you really, really want to know an exact date, you'll have to part with $75 for a letter.

Thanks DWalt. $75 for a letter? I'm not that curious I guess. It's in
pretty good original condition, but with a fair amount of freckling. Just
a nice smooth occasional shooter with modest loads. The ejector rod
knob is a separate piece and looks like it might have been case hardened
originally, hard to tell for sure with some finish wear. It's all matching
except for the non original grips so it's not really collectable but I like
it for what it is.
