Picked Up A Two-Tone Pre-27 !**Letter Update - 12/21/1953 - Rex Firearms**!
Usually stay on the 44 magnum side of the fence, but absolutely was unable to resist this stunning 357 magnum pinto! Sought out and failed many times trying to acquire a RM or Pre-27 3 1/2" barrel example, and finally was able to bring home one of my grail guns in a two-tone finish! The smooth rosewood target stocks are fabulous and my terrible pictures do not do them justice!

Yessiree bob! How long did it take you to get a letter request in the mail In all respects it look righteous to me. I can say that as I have its twin right down to the non relieved rosewood targets. Truly outstanding! That has to be on the top of most anyone's grail list. Congratulation!

Congratulations!!! Always nice to see a Pinto Pre-27, they are pretty hard to come by. It seems only the non-engraved variants are still out there because Richard owns all of the engraved ones.

Hey, hey... not so (but not for lack of trying) . I know of at least two other engraved 3.5" pintos out there that have not made their way into the RKmesa corral... In a spirit of full disclosure, since the above group photo was taken, there have been a couple more engraved 3.5" "stray" pintos that have wandered out here to the AZ looking for greener pastures and the safety of a larger herd.
Based on my experience, it appears to be more common to find a 3.5" engraved pinto, and much less common to find a longer barreled engraved pinto out there. But I keep looking.
Very happy to see Salox's beautiful Pinto, and I remember Quinn's to be mint in the box. I smile the big smile just thinking about them. I appreciate it whenever anyone shares photos of their beauties.

Sure! Class C engraved Pinto 3 1/2”, $10 for bi-tone finish plus $50 for engraving. There is one 6 1/2” bi-tone in the shipment, but not engraved.

Did it happen to have the serial number for the 6.5" listed? was it 129601?...

Unfortunately, the invoice does not list any serial numbers (not than uncommon in the 1950s).

I don't have a copy of the letter anymore, but I know Richard does. I wonder of that's the 6.5 pre 27 I sold to him

Shane:
The letter I have from Roy indicates that S129601 was shipped to Charles Greenblatt Co (NYC) on January 14, 1955. The Invoice from the Historical Foundation shows it shipping on the same date to H H Harris & Co (Chicago)... Both the invoice and the letter show it as shipping as Blue-Nickel 6.5" gun with a red ramp and rosewood target grips/stocks. Regardless of where it shipped, thanks to you, it ended up here in the AZ.

I'd love to see the Class C engraved 3.5" pinto. I don't think I've ever seen a Class C one before...

Simply stunning! Those targets look like the very earliest "cokes", pre football relief and pre checkering.
They have the bottom flare, appear to have the coke bottle palm swells, and the longer wood behind the trigger guard that the old timers originally called 'cokes' (before the checkered/relieved variety), when I was a youngster. Now I'm the oldtimer......

We seldom see the early smooth cokes and this maple set is the only other set I've ever seen in 50 years like a pair I have!

Correct on all accounts!! The pictures do not come close to displaying how excellent the targets look and handle. Great information, you have probably forgotten more about the subject than I’ll ever know, and thank you for sharing as this is why the forum is so great! To date myself, I was brought into the world after the engineering change to eliminate cylinder counterbore and pinned barrel.

That's a gorgeous revolver anybody would be PROUD of. (Actually, "proud" applies to the OP; sinful ENVY applies to everybody else!)
". . . equipped with a red post front sight . . ." For those who know terminology of the time, would this be referring to the red ramp front sight now seen on the gun, or would it be something else? I don't recall seeing the sight referred to as a "post" prior to this. Please note, I'm not throwing a harpoon. I am curious about this terminology. From my perspective, it would be quite surprising for a 3.5" .357 Magnum to be equipped with anything other than a ramp front sight, and the red insert seems consistent with this special order gun.

The invoice states the five revolvers listed were equipped with a red post front sight and hence, the terminology used in the letter. However, the .357 is fitted with a red ramp front sight, so the invoice is incorrect. In 1953, the 1/8" S & W red ramp and 1/8" S&W red post were available. The cost of the two sights was the same, so from S&W's perspective, the revolvers were correctly invoiced. However, it does cause discussion among collectors nearly 65 years later.

Well that's very unusual that one document would say one thing and the other say something different. I wonder what would cause such a discrepancy. You're pictures do that gun a lot of justice, or you're an ace with a polisher. She's looking damn good in your care. I definitely sold it to the right person.
