Default Another Victory Model

Hey folks,
Here's another messed up victory model I picked up some time back. Serial V 623564 matched on cylinder and butt. Made in U.S. stamped on right side and .38 S&W CTG on barrel. I know the stocks are not correct and nickel plating was not standard?? S&W emblem on right side is illegible (filled in by after market Nickel plating?? Is it a victory model or .38/200?? Any thoughts/comments?

That’s not an either/or

It’s a Victory from June/July 1944.

If it says 38 S&W CTG and not SPECIAL on the barrel, it is a British Service model and the barrel has been shortened from 5” to 4”. Nickel was not an original option. .38/200 is simply another name for the British service caliber .380 which was dimensionally identical to the .38 S&W.

At the time of its production, the standard barrel length of a BSR Victory would have been 5". It's highly likely that for some reason its barrel has been shortened. In any event it would have no collector value, just what someone would be willing to pay for it as a shooter. It is possible it may have been re-chambered for .38 Special. Have you checked?

Welcome to the Forum.

If the front sight looks like it was soldered or brazed on, it has been cut. Front sights were machined as part of the barrel. Most likely, the side plate was over polished, removing some of the S&W emblem.

Yes, it is still chambered for .38 S&W. It is a sweet shooter with little recoil. It is another that I got at a sheriff's auction relatively cheap. I thought I could polish it up but nickel plating is pitted in several places. Not sure how to repair nickel without de-plating and re-plating. I don't think it is worth the effort.

Muley Gil good info on the front sight. It is brazed on so definitely been shortened. I am learning something new every day on this forum.
