Smile Carved/Inlaid Stocks, mid-1950s

All stocks carved and inlaid (except one pair that is inlaid only) are by Alvin White and date to the mid-1950s. Wood types are rosewood, European walnut, Goncalo alves, and birds eye maple. The inlays are made of ivory with scrimshaw. Click on each photo for a closer look.

Bill

Those are absolutely gorgeous but I'd be afraid to put them on a revolver I intended to shoot.

I'd say the scarcity of these precludes my ever getting an opportunity to own any.

We can dream can't we.

Bill:

Those are beautiful!!! Here are a few sets that I have...

I have never been able to find a set of the "fish-mouth" stocks like Bill's outstanding birdseye maple ones, so I had Keith Brown make me a couple of sets for a matching pair of engraved 357s from the 1950s. Walnut with birdseye maple inlays...

This is another of those times when "Wow!" is just really inadequate.

Awesome X 10
Think how long it must have taken to carve those grips , by hand with small tools ...

Truly works of art.

And you can tell the difference from carving done by a machine and when done by hand.
