First handgun
After some research and with the help of this forum, I purchased my first revolver. Just picked this up yesterday. Can't wait to shoot it!
1958-59 Model 28, no dash.

Welcome...... good choice, great gun!!
That said; if you have little or no experience with handguns...... my advice is start out with some soft wadcutter/target loads...... before setting off your first full bore .357 magnum.
Also start your search for a nice 6" Model 17 .22

For your first handgun, you bought what I feel is one of the very best ever.

I'll add one thing.
I don't shoot well with magna's.
If you don't also hunt down a set of stocks that work well for you.
And since everyone likes pictures my favorite ones.

Congratulations! That is a twin to mine, 58-59 serial number range. I like to call it a '58, since it's my birth year. Those 6"28's absorb recoil a whole lot better than my first revolver, a 66-1. Of course I was much younger then too. I had to add a Tyler T grip to the magnas, and finally a set of S&W rosewood finger grips to be comfy in my creaky hand. Enjoy it!

My first N-Frame 357 was a Highway Patrolman (I added some Grasshorn Elk Stags)...
That first one opened the Highway Patrolman floodgates...
... and the N-Frame 357 floodgates in general.
Congrats on procuring one of the most functional 357's of all time. And thanks for sharing,

It is never a bad idea to start out with .38 Specials, but a big N-Frame revolver with a 6" barrel should keep the felt recoil at a very manageable level no matter what you shoot.

Welcome to the forum, that is an excellent choice for a first handgun. The others have mentioned all of the excellent advice you will need to truly become proficient with that fine revolver. Don't make the mistake many of us did by going directly to full house .357 loads, it will only come back to haunt you in the future when you have to go through all the effort of getting rid of bad habits. I'm still working on getting over flinches developed by going directly to magnums, the still rear their ugly heads after all these years. Not to mention hearing loss from not wearing proper hearing protection.

@RKmesa So this is how it begins...
I had planned on shooting mostly .38 for general pleasantness, cost and less abuse on what appears to be gun in a great condition, though consensus seems to be that these eat .357. I don't get to go to the range too often in any case.

Speaking only for myself, I seldom fire anything other than .38 Special-level handloads. I am not very fond of muzzle blast and recoil and seldom shoot anything approaching full-power loads in any of my .357 and .44 Magnum revolvers. Paper targets don't care what ammunition you use to shoot at them.

Straight to the N's for your first S&W revolver! You started out where most of us ended up. Very nice Highway Patrolman!
Also, welcome to the Smith & Wesson Forum!

If your a youngster just getting going you are in a very good position to pick up some very nice deals if you just keep your eyes and ears open. Less young people today are as interested in fine firearms as was the case when most of us older people were coming up, now all of those long held onto collections are coming out into the open market.

Not my first handgun by any means but my first S&W was a 6" mod 28-2
that I bought new back in the fall of 1966. I still have it. There's just
something about the heft of an N frame .357 revolver that says quality
and strength. You'll probably want to add a 4" version as soon as you
can. Currently I have ten N frame .357s and like others I almost never
shoot full power loads in them but it's really all about shooting the kind
of guns you like to own.

Congratulations. i don't suppose a nice N-frame 357 is ever a bad choice.
I'm another who seldom shoots magnum ammo in any of my guns. i just never saw much reason too, since paper is pretty easy to stop.

More photos
Thanks all. I would love to get a 3" and 4" down the road, but I have to rebuild good will with my wife after two in a row.
I took some additional photos today to give you folks a better look at the Model 28. Love the pics you guys have posted!

For your first gun you scored big time. A good cleaning and waxing will probably really bring out its beauty.
Just in case you didn't know......keep your body parts away from the cylinder to barrel gap. The side force escaping there can blow your fingers off. I have seen bark blown off a tree as I rested the gun in the fork of the tree. Watch hickok45 video about dangers using a revolver.
I had to laugh....you went to get your gun and you bought another one while you were there. LOL That figures......once bitten you are smitten. I see many guns in your future. I am not psychic just smitten myself. Famous last words......that is the last gun I am going to buy or I have enough guns so I will not buy anymore. I don't know how many guns I have bought after saying those words.
When I got my concealed carry permit I bought 20 handguns within a year afterward.

I gave it a bit of a cleaning and oiled it yesterday. That barrel gap is a good warning. I first learned about it watching a Miculek video on the Chiappa Rhino. Hickok45 no doubt influenced my decision to make a revolver my first.
You wax your pistols? What with?
20 handguns... I'm trying to have guns and a wife at the same time!

I use Renaissance wax {RenWax} on all my guns. I have heard many use Johnson's floor wax but I have yet to try it.
Do any of you "Wax" your blued guns?
