Default Nickle .32 Regulation Police Snub?

A LGS took this in yesterday...

Pre-War .32 Regulation Police
Matching Numbers (parts and grips)
2" Barrel
Nickle Plated (star on grip front strap)

How rare is this configuration?
Does the star indicate a re-plating?

Star could be replating, but likely the barrel was altered as well. Only a letter will tell for sure. The star indicated refinish, or any significant parts replacement/alteration IE barrel, cylinder, etc.

Shortly after WWII the 2" barrel was added to the .32 Hand Ejector model which had a round grip and grip frame.

Occasionally when a new barrel length is added by S&W to their product line, older models are sent back to the factory for installation of the new length barrel. It will be serial numbered to match the gun # and usually stamped with a diamond.

The star is added following the frame serial #. Since it is added on the front grip strap that tells me the serial # is also stamped there confirming the gun is a 32 Regulation Police. There is also a date indicating when it was "reworked" at the factory, stamped under the left grip near the front 'toe'. A diamond will be stamped near the 'heel' on the grip frame. And if it was refinished at the same time, likely an R-N for refinish-nickel in a rectangle.

If the gun was originally finished in blue, there is a B in front of the serial # on the rear face of the cyl. Otherwise the gun was originally nickeled.

This gun of course could not have been ordered new w/2" barrel obviously because it wasn't made until after the war. If the gun was ordered new with a 2" barrel after the war, it would be rare because the 2" was not regularly available on the 32 RP model.

Let us know if you get it.

It can be dated fairly closely if you can supply the SN.
