Default 38/44 Outdoorsman Post War 4 Inch Barrel

Hello,

I am new to the forum and am looking for some assistance on a gun I have purchased. I have a Post war 38/44 Outdoorsman with a 4 inch barrel. When I bought it I did not think it came from the factory in that configuration, but the work was done so nicely it looked like it had been done at the factory. I sent for a letter and Mr. Jinks confirmed that it was indeed a factory 4" 38/44 Outdoorsman that shipped in 1952. I have never seen a 4" version before and was wondering its rarity and approximate value? It is in very good condition and has the original grips.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum.
That is some introduction and we definitely need some pictures.

Serial would help as there are transitional models , I would not expect an original 4" OD to be less than a $2500 gun but I have never seen a factory 4" go up for sale so have no clue.

Did I mention we need pictures LOL

I've never seen one either so can only guess at the value which will depend considerably on condition. We really need pictures to get a handle on condition. The only thing I can offer is that a "really nice" four inch 1950 44 sold on GB earlier this year for more than $4,000. I would think a four inch 38/44 Outdoorsman would be as rare. Anyway, wonderful find. And welcome to the forum.

Congratulations on a rare one. Was it shipped to a PD or an officer?

Welcome to the forum. Wow.....that is a terrific revolver. I've never seen one in a 4" barrel length. You are most fortunate.

Yes, very curious where Roy says this was shipped. Fairly evident it has to have been a Special Order. Did Roy mention any est of how many were made in 4"? Sometimes some guns are too "rare" to give a realistic value, only an educated guess. You may be approaching a 5 figure value.

Question- other than the length of the chambers, how would this gun differ from an early 4" HP?

It looks like it was shipped in 1952 to a hardware store in Louisville, KY. The shipment contained 3 revolvers in the same configuration. There is no mention of it being for a police department and Mr. Jinks did not specify how many total 4" guns were made in my letter.

Thank you all for your input and comments!
