H E Birthdate
I have a pre-war Smith that needs a launch date. So far I have determined that it is a .38 M & P Model of1905 - 4th change. It has 5 screws and a 4 inch barrel with fixed sights. It is chambered for the "38 S & W SPECIAL CTG" and the S/N is 395147. Standard Catalog places it 1915 - 1942. Can anyone narrow the time down to a couple of years rather than decades? Thanks, Jim

Does it say MADE IN USA on the right lower frame? That started in mid-1922. I think the serial places it in late 1921 or the earlier months of 1922.
PS: Just found a reference to 391xxx shipped in April 1922. So I’m pretty confident that yours is a 1922 vintage, but could still fall on either side of the line on the stamping.

--------and 404219 shipped September 9, 1922; so you have it pretty well bracketed.
Then there's the tale of two of my single shots------just to provide a measure of credibility to our guesstimates of what happened when. 4807 was finished, and placed in the shipping vault on May 9, 1911. 4826 the same---on June 21, 1911. So far, so good---right? Well----maybe.
4826 was shipped three days later---June 24, 1911. 4807 didn't make it out until November----November the 11th----November the 11th of 1915.
The moral of this story is you have two sources for information about these toys of ours. One is an essentially anonymous statement appearing on your computer screen. The other is a letter---black ink on white paper (more like beige paper) from the historical foundation. One of them is worthwhile----for sure and certain-----it for sure and certain tells you what the factory records say----which may or may not be the fact of the matter.
That brings us to another one of my single shots---an 8" .32----#14272. The letter says it's a 10" .22.
Sleep well.
Ralph Tremaine.

Thanks all, I have be around for awhile. I am a wood and steel kind of guy who bought my first Smith in 1965 to replace an issued Victory Model on my first trip to WesPac. When S & W applied the Revered M & P name to “plastic automatic things” I took it personally. Well I’m over that now and looking forward to more interaction with you fine folks.

Generally, if a new member has 10 or less posts, I'll post a "Welcome". Sometimes, we are so anxious to give somebody info, we forget that new folks join all the time and many have little knowledge about S&Ws and sometimes, firearms at all. Many folks find a gun that grandpa stuck away and they want an ID. If we can get them to stick around, we may be able to get them to be pro-gun.
