Need help on a pre 27 find
My friend found a sack in his basement behind a wall. He has lived thee for a few years. He was checking on some plumbing and found this sack. In the sack was a few knives and some drug stuff and this pre 27 5 screw on OK shape. He figures someone in the past hid that stuff there. He wants to see if the gun was stolen. He figures it was because of the drug stuff in the sack too. I know there is a web site that you can check and see if someone has reported a stolen gun but I can not find it in a search and do not know what it is.
Can anyone help me with that web site. And no he won't take the gun to the sheriff's dept. He knows that any gun turned in there will end up in some deputies possession. That has happened in the past and one guy who caught a deputy with his gun had to go to court to get it back. Yes I know not all sheriff's deputies are bad but the few make the majority look bad.

Seeing the OP's location he might provide the S/N to the county sheriff's office and ask them to do a NCIC check. If it's stolen turn it in, if not finders keepers.

Make sure he has changed the locks on his house and he needs to lock the doors when he’s not home.

^^^ Right, like not being able to unlock the door is going to stop a criminal from entering!

So you keep your doors and windows unlocked 24/7 then? Because what's the point?

You do what you can to stop em or slow em down. It may be a little paranoid, but he could put in a security system. Personally, I’m looking for sign for my back door: Security system provided by S&W.

Call the sheriff office and ask how you check to make sure the gun is not reported stolen.
I would not lose an ounce of sleep over the previous occupants. They have no way to know the gun and other contraband has been located.
They have obviously forgotten about it or it would not be where it was found.
I would NOT hand the gun over to anyone unless it shows up as stolen. Chances of ever seeing it again no matter the disposition would be slim at best.
Not saying the police are crooked, but red tape, regulations etc. could tie it up for an eternity.
AND pictures would be great too

Saw just the sign you want yesterday...a nice white letters decal on the back window of a Chevy pickup....."Body Piercing by Smith & Wesson".

Just call the Sheriff's dept and ask if they will run a serial number for you. Don't provide any details other than that. If its stolen, let them have it. Otherwise, enjoy!
Yeah, we want pictures.

I would do the Highway patrol suggestion. No Stae police in Montana.
It is possible that the sheriff dept is bent. Also they may well not just run the number, but insist he brings it in for them to inspect and run the number.
I could put him in contact with a Montana county sheriff that knows me and I trust to do the right thing. PM me if you want.

Missouri has a found property statute. Property found and turned in can be claimed by the person turning the property in after a wait period, six months if I remember correctly. Get a report number and wait for a disposition.
Other states may have similar statutes and I would guess statutes can be searched on line now.

Wow a very interesting thread I started. I talked to my friend and he already threw the drug stuff away at the dump. I did the check on the hotgunz site and clean. My friend also called another S&W guy and he knows the neighboring sheriff and they did a serial # check and it is clean. AND my friend has no interest in the gun SO I might just be posting pics of my new to me pre 27!!!!!

Well I'm about 400 miles from the gun and my friend. I will post pics as soon as I get back there and hopefully get the gun.

Might as well put up a sign of all the things worth stealing in your home...

That's funny. So to be safe no gun signs. But, how about not having a nice house, nice cars etc. Most thieves are looking for signs of prosperity and an easy target. They are looking for easy safe prey. A gun sign may say guns could be available, but it also says higher risk. I am nit a fan of such signs but not because I believe they increase risk if a break in

Sure, a nicer home can imply desirable belongings, but a gun sign outside guarantees it and checks off one of the top four items burglars are hoping to find, along with drugs, jewelry and cash.

How about a sign that says: took the jewelry and cash and bought drugs, which I have ingested. Watching cartoons with a S& W in my lap. ??

I would clean it, lube it, and lock it in my Safe.
Would not do anything mentioned above including post it on this forum or anywhere else!
