My first .22 caliber Smith & Wesson
I had finally decided to hunt down a .22 Smith & Wesson revolver. I have so many other wonderful vintage .22's and thought last thing I need is yet another. After reading all the posts on here and seeing the large amount of small variations in the .22 revolver S&W has made since 1931 made me start the search. The man I got this one from said it had been in a safe full of guns his dad and uncle accumulated. Most of were greased up or full of cosmoline for the long haul and he said this K 22 Outdoorsman had been in the safe for about 60 years. It took a lot of cleaning tobget the thick oil or grease out of it but looks like new now all cleaned up. The serial is 654899 so its probably late 1935 or early 1936 with 2 screw rear sight and bright stainless front sight. Unfortunately he did not have original grips but these early post war magnas with serial #154500 in right grip fit so perfect I think an expert may have fit them to this gun long ago. They feel great in the hand and look like they were put on at factory so Ill probably keep it this way. A few handling marks on the gun will allow me to shoot it occasionally without guilt if I do it carefully. I guess its because of the grips the gun feels bigger and heavier than my other pre war K frames but should make an excellent range shooter. So here is a couple pics all cleaned up and I am quite happy with it for under $900 but a box and or original grips would have made it a real bargain.

Very nice K22 Outdoorsman, but I would look for a set of original round top silver medallion stocks. 1930s K frame stocks are out there and if you keep looking, you will find a nice set. Magna stocks have a way of creating a "shadow" on the metal over time. Original is always better for these fine revolvers and since there were less than 20,000 made, the market remains quite strong. One kind member here sold me a very nice set for my pristine K22 after I posted in this Forum's Wanted to Buy section.

That old dude is sweet! Mine is from 1934 and my favorite .22 shooter, sure don't look that nice though! I did find a set of period correct grips, but tend to leave the 50's targets on it...what a fine piece of workmanship you have there

That's a beauty hkcavalier!! What type of front sight you rocking there? Marbles ivory bead? I really like it because it is a little different! Must be great to see, in order to line up that sight on target???

I got some great news on the stocks situation. 22hipower has a set in really nice shape that are only a few hundred numbers off from mine. He has agreed to sell them to me so next picture the gun will look completely original. Thanks 22hipower!!!!

It's a Marble front sight, probably brass. From S&W like that, got the letter and everything

Nice "first" .22 S&W you got. I dare say it will not be your last. I don't have nearly as much "sickness" as many on this forum, but it's plenty bad enough.
Left side, top to bottom:
.22/32 Heavy Frame Target - 1924
K-22 Outdoorsman - 1939
K-22 Masterpiece - 1953
Right side, top to bottom:
1953 .22/32 Kit Gun - 1956
Mod 17-4 Masterpiece - 1980
K-22 Combat Masterpiece - 1957
And there are sooooooo many more.......
