Default Blinged Out! - Combat Magnum K260035

I just realized that I have never posted a thread on this gun...

This one left the factory on June 14, 1956 and it is one of the very earliest serial numbered Combat Magnums (they started numbering at K260000, or so I recall). This one had been scratched up pretty badly over its life and I could never feel the love for it. So I sent it to be embellished with a little gold and a lot of cutting by my engraver friend Phil Quigley [a few more detailed photos are posted in post 25, below].

and a few closer-ups:

Thanks for letting me share,

Very nice

I like the GOLD ramp front sight.

Is the rear blade done with a GOLD outline to match?

Richard

To be exact, K260001 is the start of the series.

Feel the lover ??? Is that an Arizona thing ?

Regards, Mike

Amazing workmanship...
And so is the engraving! :-)
Sorry couldn’t resist- I have a weakness for blue K frames.
This is definitely exceptional

Mike-

No. Feeling the lover is a universal human thing.

Wow! That is a SUPERB gun!

Carry that in a good lined holster. It'll scuff a lot less than if worn in cheap leather.

Is the scene of the Indian from a Frederick Remington painting or sculpture?

Thanks Mike. Once you said that, it sparks a memory and if I recall correctly, K260001 is somewhere up in the North West US and K260003 is Bill's spectacular Alvin White engraved "JFK" gun.

I'd like to say that "feel the lover" is an AZ thing, because I kind of like it. But really, it is something that occurred when my fingers stopped keeping up with my brain... Brain said "feel the love for..." fingers typed "feel the lover..." Then when I re-read it I inserted the "for", but brain did not register to delete the "r"... I'd like to blame that on getting older - but I've been making those kinds of mistakes for years. Thank you folks for putting up with me here on the forum.

AWESOME Combat Magnum...Richard...YOU ARE THE MAN and I bow down in your presence.

Mike , If we agree that "Ship dates" trump serial numbers Jim Jordans serial K-260001 is actually not the "Earliest" Combat Magnum as according to my records one other gun left the factory a little bit earlier.

IIRC S&W reserved a five thousand serial number run from K-260,001 up for the very first Combat Magnums, except for a few VIP guns the early guns seem to begin shipping in April , May and June 1956 and of course not in serial order.

The first 1500 or so are unique in that they have the older 6 groove tangs, (A very neat feature for OCD nuts like me).
Somewhere around K-2616xx there is a change from the old 6 groove tang to the new "10 Groove" tang (which BTW matches the barrel rib grooves).
[IMG][/IMG]

Combat Magnum K-261043 (above) is about 1000 digits higher than Richards but shipped exactly 2 weeks later .

As an interesting aside while the Combat Magnum was the first K Magnum frame to appear it was also the first K frame without an upper sideplate screw....
In other words (unlike its big brother the Pre Model 29) No five screw Combat Magnums exist.

While most of the first 5000 in my records shipped in 1956 some trickled out as late as April 1957 (early nickel guns even as late as May 1958).

The next batch seems to appear around K-317xxx sometime in mid 1958.
Have a Non Model marked Combat Magnum Serial K-317946 that shipped in May 1958.

The earliest Model marked 19 I have in my records is a low K-3180xx gun that shipped September 1958.

Thanks for sharing Richard that one is a real beauty, makes me wanna have a few done.
Best regards
Brad

Richard -

Let's see if I got this right. That old gun was scratched, so you went and had it scratched MORE???

Good thing the new scratcher was very good at scratching!

Beautiful result.

Here are a few more photos showing some of the finer touches of Mr. Quigley's talented cutting:

To all who commented, thank you very much. I really enjoy doing these Smith's.The sculpture in this one was originally done by Mr. Buck McCain in Tucson Az. I believe the original was above life size and is housed at the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Buck is a good friend of mine and is one of the most talented sculptors in the world.

I've lost track of how many times I've come back to look at this amazing revolver. I've showed the photos to many friends, even non-gun folks, and to a one they were all very impressed.

Allow one more thank you for posting it.

Beautiful work!
I like the S&W medallion moved over to the front lower portion of the left side of the frame to make room for the work on the sideplate.
I'd have service style grips on it to show off all the full coverage engraving on the sides,,but that's just me,,and I like the service stocks anyway.

Congrats on a fine revolver!

I like the way it keeps your eyes moving in amazement from one place to the next.

I value your perspective as I have seen a few photos you have posted of some of your beautiful engraving and I agree that it would look beautiful with some service stocks. Now to find a set that will add to and not detract from the engraving...
