When S&W first come out with the original 357 magnum, it was an N frame and a special order gun. Each was assembled and fitted by their top craftsmen to buyers specifications as to barrel length, range sighted to at factory etc. In addition t a serial number each had its own registration number stamped in yoke cut out. Paperwork was provided for owner to register gun with factory after delivery. The holy grail of most S&W collectors. Its was later produced without registration number, then evolved into the pre model 27 then the model 27

And if you're wondering about prices, here's one that sold earlier this week. Seems nice ones are going in the $10k range lately. Any thoughts as to where prices are going from here?

Seems hard to believe...but simple supply and demand suggests nowhere but UP!

That gun had two very uninformed bidders, or they knew something the rest of us couldn't see!
As Kris said when this was posted earlier, that gun is a train wreck.

I didn't see the earlier post. Don't know enough about Registered Magnums but want to learn; especially learn what to look for in this kind of an auction. There was no S&W letter which seems odd and maybe a warning sign. Some of the stamps (SN on butt) were light but I couldn't see enough to be sure of a re-finish although the description did say barrel and cylinder might have been "restored." What were the other warning signals please?

I can see where a 5" Reg Mag with a 2 digit Reg # would bring a little bigger $, but this is way beyond what I would ever consider.

I had that one in my watch list and couldn't agree more with your statement. When the bidding went above 4k I was thinking did they even read the description.

NO number on barrel!
Pics 2 & 6- Grips are refinished
Pic 7- Large ding on cyl, but no metal is upset around the ding
It may be the pics, which aren't great, but it does not appear to be the right color for carbona blue. I think it is a very good polish job, but it was blued with hot salts.

How can you render an opinion of the gun as a train wreck if you have not personally examined the gun. I guess the pics are the same as an examination. Im just a newbie.

Obvious questions about GB revolver
Seller carefully failed to show serial numbers on: barrel, cylinder, under extractor. He can claim he was honest with his statement about barrel and cylinder....both are a different color than the frame.
If a parts gun goes for $10K, what is a righteous gun worth? Probably not as much as we think.

So, lessons I'm taking from this discussion:
If a highly collectible S&W, there should be a S&W letter of authenticity. If there isn't, look harder and ask questions.
One of those questions should be "are all the SNs in the right place and do they match?" In this case the lack of a barrel SN indicates the barrel has been replaced.
Third lesson, study stock refinish indications. Have to confess even with pictures 2 and 6 being pointed out, and studying them, I can't see definite refinish indicators. Again, asking about stock SNs matching the gun might help.
I do now see the ding on the cylinder (Pic 7) but without it being pointed out I would have missed it. Probably would have assumed it to be a minor issue in a gun this old.
I think I can tell original finish if I have a Registered Magnum in hand but I can't tell from the quality of the blue in these pictures. The light strike of the 4 on the butt bothered me a little but perhaps that isn't an issue?
I've been watching Registered Magnum sales for the past several months and prices vary considerably. Even ones where the seller acknowledges a refinish, parts replacement, etc. prices are $3k, $4k, sometimes higher. Very nice, apparently original ones, are $5k to $10k and more with accessories. Interested in buying but auctions like this one make me very nervous.
Suppose another lesson learned here is to buy from a respected seller; although one would think an A+ rating with over 3,000 sales should mean something.
What other obvious issues have I overlooked? Didn't mean to takeover the OPs thread but perhaps this discussion helps answer his original question.

I may as well throw my .02 cents worth in by saying it appears to have a humpback hammer before its normal production time.

I may not have the lineage of many members here, but I do have a pretty good working knowledge of S&W revolvers. Your statements are spot on. When we're dealing with guns that are in that price category and that collectable we had better be darn certain that what we're are buying is what is said it is.
For me it's difficult to lay down beyond about 2k for any gun not seen. I looked at that revolver and it made me nervous, to many variables evolved to spend that kind of money even if it was from a reputable dealer.

... For comparison, here's some poor photos of my 5" RM with some wear (all of it honest) .
... all numbers match.

RKmesa - That's a great looking RM, one that anyone (me too) should be proud to own and shoot once in a while.

RK, that gun is a disgrace. It clearly does not belong in your collection! I know just the guy you can sell it to....

I'd much prefer a Registered Magnum with a little honest wear than a minty RM that was suspect. But I'm almost always suspect of guns that look too good. I'm not an online auction gun buyer, and have only purchased a few guns online when they were too cheap, and somehow others missed them. They were all great purchases, and a couple turned out to be better than I ever imagined when they arrived.

The fact is that the barrel on the gun in question is not the one that originally came with the gun, and that should definitely lower the price of the gun. Notice in the image below the serial numbers of the guns are factory stamped into the guns. Ed
