1917 Commercial - Post War
Here's my 1917 Commercial, that I recently purchased. I really have an appreciation for the 1917 in all variations because of it's historical significance, not to mention the simplistic beauty, reliable design and function. Just holding it, I fell in love with this one!
My particular gun dons some finely checkered grips attributed to phenomenal Gunsmith, George Hoenig. This gun was shipped on November the 4th, 1947 as lot of 12 such revolvers to Hunt Distributing in Michigan. The serial number is just one above forum member SRT's 1917, though different shipping.
I thought I would flood you with some pictures, as it seems there is a voracious appetite for pictures of our most beloved and treasured Smith & Wessons!
It came with butt swivel, and originally checkered walnut silver medallion grips.

That's about as pretty as they get, beautiful firearm. I'm in complete agreement with you concerning the value of these fine old revolvers, historically as well their functionality.

A nice example of a “Postwar Transitional” 1917 Army.
And of course, all Commercial 1917s are postwar - you just have to specify which war. Enjoy!

I think I just bought its "slightly older" brother. Serial number is S210353, but the finish isn't as nice. I'm still proud of it, and waiting on a letter for shipment details.

Very cool! Glad to hear it, and looking forward to your shipment letter. Great guns, that we are fortunate to be the caretakers!

Nice gun, nice grips ! Just got one myself. I will post a thread soon. One question: is your bluing so dark it’s almost black? It is a soft matte finish? Dave
I guess that’s 2 questions!

I look forward to learning the particular aspects of your 1917.
My gun is not black, more like a dark blue satin. Not shiny like my pre war Outdoorsman, more similar to a Model 28's finish (without the flat finish that 28's have on the underside). There is oil residue on mine, from cleaning, and gives it a little more shiny appearance.

That is a great looking gun hope it shoots as good as its looks. The grips are a work of art.. I’ve got to start poking around for a correct set grips for mine. I have a set I bought here on the forum a few years ago they have a sliver coming off them on the top side, might just super glue it down and call it good.

Thank you! Mr. Hoenig did a wonderful job with these grips. I will probably be on the search for some some stags for shooting, or maybe just throw on some Pachmyrs.
The action on this 1917 is excellent, and it was suggested that Mr. Hoenig may have had refined the action. This 1917 was previously owned by Tom Siatos (2nd Editor of Guns & Ammo), who apparently had a close working relationship with Mr. Hoenig.
