Hi and welcome to the Forum.

It is a .38 Military & Police revolver from sometime in 1950. A nearby serial numbered gun shipped in September of that year.

As soon as possible, find and buy a copy of Geoffrey Boothroyd's, The Handgun. Crown Publishers, 1970.

And get Elmer Keith's, Sixguns, the 1961 rev. ed.

You will be vastly better informed. These are, I think, the best basic books for new handgunners, although somewhat dated.

Of course, there are specialist books on S&W and other brands. But a good general knowledge is highly desirable.

Your 1950 vintage M&P is a nice home defense gun with some outdoors potential, too. It should serve you well. Learn to maintain it right, and it won't let you down.

And welcome to the board.

Those books are 11 and 20 years newer than the OP's revolver. Gave me quite a chuckle that they're "somewhat dated." Thanks for that TS!

Default Thanks and another question

I appreciate the help you've given for this novice! I need to determine a value on this firearm to add to my homeowners coverage. Any help determining this would be appreciated. A replacement cost is what I'm looking for.

In typical average condition, maybe $300-$400 at retail. Unless it is in essentially unused condition with its original box and paperwork, in which case maybe an additional $200-$300. It may not warrant any additional insurance premium.

Depending on condition those are around $300-400. They were made for years as kind of thel standard no frills revolver. Hopefully the it has more memory value as a reminder of who ever bequest it to you.

I would suggest that you try to contact someone with some safe gun handling experience and become more experienced. The majority of shooters are very friendly and willing to welcome a newcomer and help them learn. Listing or posting your location might help you contact a member from here willing to mentor you. Enjoy.

Guns are no more dangerous than cars. But, proper instruction and handling and can prevent a accident. Plus, vastly improve your ability to use and enjoy your revolver. Kind of like a car. Just starting one up and taking off isn't necessarily the best way to learn how to be a good driver.
