Default Three M&P's-a 1905 4th, S Prefix, C Prefix

I had been looking at this 1905 for well over a year now at a local pawn shop. After picking up the dog from the beauty parlor Saturday I stopped by to see if they still had it and it was still there. I fully intended for it to leave with me but they also had a really nice near NIB C prefix and an excellent condition S prefix. That really fouled things up, couldn't make up my mind so I told them I would think about them over the weekend and try to come to a decision. They said they would be open half a day New Years eve if I wanted to come and look again and so I did. Ended up leaving with all three. All numbers match on all 3 with the exception of the 1905's grips(stocks) which are unnumbered. The 1905 5646XX I think is 1926-27 era, the S8555XX late '46 early '47 and the C1802XX I'm going to guess as a '49-51 model(as far as ship dates go). Please correct me if I'm wrong.

1905 4th 5646XX

S Prefix S8555XX

C Prefix 1802XX

Nice batch and good move bringing all three home.

That seems about right. I have one in my collection at 531xxx that letters to February, 1926.

Guns in this range shipped all the way from November, 1946, until March, 1947. But those at the extremes appear to be fliers. I would estimate yours to have shipped most likely in December, 1946.

Probably mid- to late-1951, based on the list of known ship dates I have compiled.

You might want to look again. At that time, the number was written with a pencil and can be faint and difficult to see. Try shining a bright light on it and looking with a magnifying glass at an oblique angle. Sometimes you will be able to see and read it using that technique.

The closest I have data on is a 6" S853105 that shipped 11/46. S870042 (4") shipped 1/47.

s/n 561054 (5" barrel) shipped 1/28.

Not much help on your C180xxx. I know C155209 shipped in 1950.

Here is a shot of a penciled s/n from a 1914 stock.

The S prefix gun looks like it spent some time in a right--hand holster. Could have some stories to tell. Thanks for the post & good pics. All nice .38s.

I looked at the right grip again under a bright light, I can see some very light penciling but unfortunately I can't make out any of the numbers. I have the same problem with my 1917 Commercial, it has the same type grips. I feel both are original, the fit is too perfect for replacements.
