Default New to me 38/44 Austin Police Department #42

Very happy to have picked up this .38/44 Heavy Duty from a good friend of mine the other day for the princely sum of $950. The backstrap is marked Austin Police Department 42. This would have been in the first shipment, correct? It appears to have been back to the factory twice, once in Sept 1952 and Sept 1972. All numbers are correct minus the stocks. The stocks have been changed out and the front sight has been filed down before the last time it was re-nickeled. I am going to look for an appropriate set of stocks or maybe a nice set of stags/elk or maybe even a nicer set - guess I will know when I find them!

Better watch out for Ringo1597!!

He is trying to reconstitute the APD armory single-handed.

Seriously nice N frames - both of them.

Very nice! As a Texan, I’m jealous. I have not come across an APD gun yet. Earl

Those are awesome. I’m keeping my eye out for a 38/44 Heavy Duty, and an APD gun would be a cherry on top!

Uh, I usta have one of those but then Ringo1597 wanted it worse than his Jovino though he apparently later questioned his own sanity. Last month after 2 years of hunting he told me he found another Jovino to replace the one now in my collection. But, after 2 years of hunting I still haven't found another APD fro my collection. Life is inteesting.

The first shipment was June 3rd, 1952 according to the letter I received from Mr. Jinks.......so yes, your APD 38/44 was in that shipment.

The rack number's on our two APD guns are not far apart.....notice the difference in the rollstamp on the backstrap.

Default GRIPS

Wow These are the grips you need or something from the time custom or aftermarket from the time. This may be good you as don't have the original stocks. I like your gun it was a worker and holds stories hold it and it will talk. Good luck. JIM

Man these are really cool, I've never seen the markings on the backstrap like that.

I have a Model 58 that is marked from San Antonio PD, but it's near the front of the trigger guard on the left side.

This Austin-born but California-raised boy has No. 153 in his safe. That's probably my strongest connection to the city at this point, though I still have cousins in other parts of Texas.

I saw this post and realize that there are different roll stamps on the backstrap of these guns. Because of this, I would also imagine that there could be some counterfeits. I saw this one and it doesn't look like the others to me and was wondering if it was correct? I know this gun has a later number than many posted here. Also, were all the APD .38/44's nickel?

Were all the APD guns sent back to the factory at some point for a refinish or is it possible to find one that wasn't sent back? Thanks.
Larry

Default APD

I have a bunch of 38/44s HDs, I bought mine before they became so popular. I don't have an APD 38/44 HD but I did manage to get one of their 3 1/2" M- 27s. What is really strange Is I came into a Few San Antonio marked Pistols and one .44 W&C Houston PD revolver. Finding Police department guns can become an addiction.

Honored to say that APD 54 resides here, together with much general affection for the state of TX (and also grandson at TCU).

Though original stocks were MIA, Ken D provided very handsome elk stags.

I guess it's been close to 20 years ago I had an Austin PD H-D from the first shipment. I sent that one back to Texas to another forum member in trade for a 4" Wolf & Klar .44. I don't remember the rack number, but the S/N (S 89898) was fairly easy to remember. I wonder who has that one now? And I wonder how many times it's changed hands since I let it go.

My old gun show partner brought this one in for me to look at several years ago. He would not sell it to me and now he is gone. Rest in peace Bobby. I don't have the SN.

I carried one of those 38/44s when I joined APD in 1969 don't remember the number, until 1973 when it was replaced with the Mod. 27 also nickle.
The 27 was no. 404.

You guys (with APD-marked guns) are killing me! Lol

I have lived in and near Austin, Texas since just after the fall of the Berlin Wall (November, 1989, for you kids). 🤪
My grandfather (born in 1917) grew up here and sold the family land that became Willie Nelson’s.

The number of APD revolvers in my safe: exactly zero!

Good on you, though (lucky dogs!).
Thanks for sharing… I hope to “join the club” one day.

-Bill
