Default Info on real ivory grips

I’m looking to buy a M1905 with real ivory grips. the gun itself don’t interest me it’s ruff poor reblueing etc. But the grips look great, clean smooth no chips no cracks. There’s no medallion also no ser.# on inside. My question is, is it legal to buy or sell ivory and if so what is the value. If anyone out there can help I’d appreciate it

The link will help you with some of the federal rules, but many states have additional, and sometimes much more restrictive rules and laws. I think that as you describe the situation, you are probably ok, but read all the stuff in the link, and check for local law there in Maine.

Look for the "de minimus" test.

Best Regards, Les

You are fine. I have to deal with this all the time in my state where things are a little trickier. Unless I'm selling piano keys, I'm subject to ridiculous laws. Apparently a lot of wealthy people own pianos, but not so many own pool cues and ivory-gripped revolvers.

Remember that Federal law supercedes state, even if the state law seems to contradict the Federal. For example, in Washington state I am not allowed to sell ivory, period; however, I can sell it across state lines if it meets the antique requirements, because the Federal law says I can - Washington state has no say. But if I even put antique ivory (or any ivory) up for sale on a Washington state website, they can assume I intend to sell it within the state, and I'm subject to getting thrown in jail.

California is basically the same - don't sell ivory within either state, regardless of age.
