WOW!! Is the box, paper, tools, certficate, or tube with it? If they haven't, I'd letter it and get the S&WHF documents as well. I'd hang on to that one too, especially with the family connection.

It’s like brand new, I took the grips off to check for any marking on the frame. The single screw holds the assembly together and there are two thin sheet metal half’s that sandwich behind the grips they are drilled to allow the pins that engage the grips on the bottom to pass thru. I had see pictures here but never directly handled the part pieces. Very well thought out design. It was like handling the constitution. Almost an out of body experience!

Default I just nearly fainted.

I looked at the picture initially and thought that was one of those screwdrivers that come in the plastic bag when you buy a Stihl chainsaw to adjust the chain! But then I enlarges and zoomed in.

There should be two screws---a long one securing grips and adapter to the gun's frame----and a short one securing the insert (finger rest??) between the adapter plates.

The short one appears to be there, but if not, it's a 5X44----and I have some; which with a little whittling and a dab of cold blue can be fashioned into an EXACT replica of the original. Let me know if you'd like to have one or two.

Here is a photo showing what Ralph is describing - the small screw secures the rubber filler to the two panels and the grip screw secures the grips and adapter to the frame.

That was the screw I was trying to describe, I figured the grip screw was a given. Thanks for your help to clarify. The gun and the grip adapter were in amazing condition. When I saw a two digit reg# I almost fainted. The only other place I have seen a Registered Magnum was at a the symposium. They are a sight to behold.

The gun was bought new by the present owner’s grandfather and past to his father and then on to him. His grandfather owned a large lumber mill in Maine and the whole family are well known outdoor sportsmen. The gun came to my attention at a local gunshow. I had a pre 27 for sale on my table and the the guy looking at it said he had one just like it. He remarked it is marked inside REG 3X. I almost fainted, when I came to I asked him if I could see the gun. He went home and got it and brought it back to the show. I asked if I could take photo’s of the gun. The first picture I took of the REG number didn’t come out so good. I realized I was shaking while taking it. We chatted for a while and I suspected the gun may have been Refinished cause it was so nice. The owner let me take the grips off and search for rework dates. None were found and further examination revealed no buffing and the roll marking was very crisp. I told him I would value the gun around 12K. I’m no expert but I have been around a while and followed many of these at online auctions. There was a fellow SWCA member at my table when the gun was shown and not long after that he bought one on gunbroker he was very impressed with the gun to say the least.
