Default Old Chief for an Old Chief

Since learning about Baby Chiefs some time back, I have been wanting one...Very badly! Well last night my dream came true, (maybe a nightmare if my Wife finds out what I paid for it). The truth is I don't care, IMHO it is a beauty, and for a short while it was a piece of S&W History as it was listed in the 4th Edition of the Standard Catalog. That part has changed of course, but no matter.

Pre 36, 5 Screw, Smooth Front Ramp, Matching Diamond Magna Grips, and a 1952 ship date with a really cool serial number...what's not to like? I think she is a real beauty, but reasonable people can disagree so draw your own conclusions.

One thing I can promise, as long as I am walking this earth she will not be for sale again.

Good for you! That is a nice one and probably the least numerous type... that smooth ramp front sight was a short-lived feature. I've had both the half penny version that came before (and foolishly let it get away) and now own the later serrated front sight version, but it is rare to even see the one you got. I think you will find the ramp sight the easiest to pick up, especially as your eyes get older (I'm getting ready to turn 70.) Hope you enjoy it and I promise not to tell your wife how much you had to pay for it.

That is a great find, especially in that condition. As said above, the smooth ramp is the most rare of the Baby Chiefs.
Well done!

Congratulations on your purchase, I’m glad we were able to make this dream of yours come true! Don’t forget one of the coolest features about that baby chief, according to the 4th edition of the standard catalog, it is the very last smooth ramp baby chief ever made!! Very happy to see it go to a great home, congrats again!

Hi Danny,

You truly found a prize! Congrats.

The rd sight Baby Chiefs are actually the rarest, but the smooth front sight version like yours is still unique!

The Baby Chiefs are too early and too different to be a Pre Model 36. The Model of 1953 "NEW" J frame 4 and 3 screw versions (the full size model) is the true Pre Model 36.

Enjoy!

Hey Danny,

I'll take the "Holy Mackerel" reply before someone else gets it.

Congrats buddy!

P.S., I'll check the mail again tonight, thinking it'll be here.

Thanks Pal, can’t wait to get my hands on this beauty ( and yours) very soon.

I would think traveling over the weekend it should be there, please let me know and I’ll follow up if it’s not.

Thanks Jim, seems like it’s impossible for me to get on the forum and not learn something new, so much to learn. I honestly did not know that Baby Chiefs stood alone. But common sense says they should, I thought they were all Pre 36’s. Of course as my old boss used to say, there’s nothing common about common sense.

I do understand there has been a successor to 12340 as the latest number smooth ramp, I almost had my 15 minutes LOL. But as I told Bob, no matter at all, it’s a beautiful old piece of history just the same.

Thank you again!

Very nice find. Excellent condition.

I may be incorrect but I don't believe it is a 5-screw as you describe. I see the 4 on the side plate. What are you counting as the 5th screw ?

Is there a screw in the front of the trigger guard ? Thanks, Sal

Very cool. I'd love to have one, but judging by the prices I've followed from time to time on the auction sites, they are a little spendy for me. But maybe it will happen some day.

Congrats!

Thank you! It was fun and got a bit spirited there at the end of the auction. I’m sure my competition was disappointed. But as we all know there will be no more of these, except those that are finally released from private collections. This beauty has found a home. I was foolish enough to let some great ones get away through the years, and I’ve been blessed enough to replace them all. Rest assured it will be well cared for.

That is one gorgeous and unique Baby Chief!

I assume that there won't be any range report forthcoming anytime soon?

Speaking of letting a good one get away... my first Baby was a finish challenged but otherwise very nice early round sight model that had spent years circulating among LEOs in the Henrico County, VA PD. A talented friend, now deceased, took it apart, cleaned and degreased it well, then reblued it for me. A collector might cringe, but it came out beautifully and if you didn’t know about the blue, most folks couldn’t tell.

Then I went through my Quigley phase (“I didn’t say I couldn't use one, I said I didn’t have any use for one.”) and foolishly sold it. Once I came to my senses it took 15+ years to get a replacement. “Ve grow too soon oldt und too late schmardt.” From personal experience, hold on to that one, Chief, you’re not likely to get a better one!

Yes, Sal, four on the side plate and one in front of the trigger guard. These photos are from 6353 -- the only ones I have that show the 5-screw layout. Like Danny's new Baby, 6353 also has a smooth ramp front sight.

ps: looking at these images on here, I see I should have picked one Bubba hadn't used his pocket screw driver on.

Hey Sal, yes sir, there is the 5th Screw in the trigger guard. I am certainly no expert, but from my reading of the 4th Edition Catalog, and numerous posts from true experts, the trigger guard screw was not eliminated until 1953, of course this one is a 1952 smooth ramp, there seems to be some debate over whether it was shipped in May or August of that year. I’ve already posted a letter request to Roy, so I’m sure he will confirm the actual ship date in the not too distant future.

Let me dispel the rumor, Danny.

Here's my "newest" Baby Chiefs.

You can see the fifth screw ahead of the small, round trigger guard.

This one, like several others on my list, shipped in May '54, the last month I show for a Baby Chiefs to be shipped.

See, only goes to prove you can learn something every day if you keep you eyes and ears open. I thought that 5th screw went away prior to the 1953 revision.

I have several baby Chiefs, only one with a smooth front sight and none with the early round front sight. Now I have to pull them out to look again.

Thanks, guys. Sal

You can learn something every day, even at my age. I mistakenly thought that 5th screw had gone away earlier than the 1953 revision. Thanks for the input.

Thanks Bob, never a day I don’t learn something new here, I love it!

Not trying to question your knowledge, just trying to understand. So the book says it was eliminated in 53, is it fair to assume yours may have been manufactured in 53 and shipped in 54? Or is there an even more interesting explanation?

Thanks again Bob.

Well I’m not sure I’d go that far, with the exception of some of my old black powder firearms (Model 1, Colt New 30, Marlin 1887, etc.), I shoot everything I own. The previous owner back in 2009 reported he never shot it, and from the look it hasn’t been fired much at all. I have a 62 2” 36 no dash, and a 71 3” no dash, both I shoot at least a couple of times a year. The little things snubbies are just so much fun at the range. I have a Colt Lawman 2” 357 that Fords refinished for me last year, it’s almost too pretty to shoot, but someday...

Picture of the refinished Lawman (did you notice the plum latch), and the Colt Commando (which some nut had nickel plated) just to show the beautiful work they do.

Great question, Danny.

I think I know the answer, but some of those who've been at this for far longer than me can sure step in and help me learn more.

The "Model of 1953" truly did come out in 1953 with four screws, a longer, oval trigger guard, and an ⅛" longer grip frame, however -- other than a few oddball outliers -- the only Model of 1953 Chiefs shipped in 1953 were Airweight models, built on an aluminum alloy frame and with an aluminum cylinder.

The earliest of those about which I know was in the 2400x serial range, and it shipped in January 1953.

The first "steel" Model of 1953 Chiefs Special I know of shipped in June 1954, but the lowest serial numbered Model of 1953 Chiefs didn't ship till September.

Hope this helps.

ps: to muddy the waters just a wee bit more, the earliest Model of 1953 J-framed .38 Chiefs Special Hammerless (a.k.a. Centennial) actually (supposedly) shipped in December 1952. To my knowledge there were no Baby Centennials.

pps: to un-muddy the waters I must add this: The book you excerpted is not wrong. Since it came out in 2016 many S&W Chiefs have come out of the woodwork and changed some of the specific entries, such as your own 12340 being recently replaced by 12630. My 2928 is now the lowest known smooth ramp front sight (not 2945 as the book says). I'm not sure we'll ever catalog exactly which was the first or last of any specific feature because those Chiefs are likely buried in the bowels of some dark safe and may never see the light of day. I have a feeling this is not just related to Chiefs. (okay, I'm finished yammering now.)

For your records, SN:9825 Chiefs Special is a smooth ramp, too. Sal

Fine information as always Bob, thank you my friend.

Once again I didn’t put 2 and 2 together and even think about how old the 4th Edition was, 3 years is a lifetime and so much can change. You are absolutely right about those stashed away, Lord only knows how many there are. So many guns, so little time!

Very happy to see it go to a great home, congrats again!
The Baby arrived late yesterday and I picked her up today, my goodness the pictures don’t do it justice! Amazing how good it looks after 67 years. I am the caretaker now, it will be well cared for and passed on to the family. I told my middle son they would need a lottery between the six kids for this one. But then I have a 19 year old Grandaughter who loves guns as much as I do...may just skip a generation and give it to her. Wouldn’t that stir it up, give them a reason to gripe about the old man after I’m gone.

(maybe a nightmare if my Wife finds out what I paid for it).

A thought to keep in mind for such occasions( of which I had many)

It is much easier to ask for forgiveness than permission

I'd shoot it too. I also shoot everything I own, I mean that's what they were made for! Your new Chief has a turn line so I don't think you'll affect the value any by enjoying it from time to time. I wouldn't every day carry it, but I'd shoot the sucker!

Glad to hear you got it, Danny.

Always a great day when you pick one up, and it's better than you expected.

Congrats!

As a bachelor, I have something of the same concern... what happens to my "treasures" after I'm gone? Fortunately my two nieces and the husband of the elder one are all gun enthusiasts. When I mentioned bequeathing my guns at my passing, the younger niece said "there will be a lot of us fighting over your guns after you're gone!" I think they will be well received.

Now that's one to be proud of! Congratulations on a wonderful acquisition.

Just curious...have you fired it yet? And will you letter it?

Food for thought...and you probably already have but...

Years ago I started a spreadsheet with all the pertinent info on all the firearms I own. The stuff you would expect, model, serial, caliber, date aquired, etc. Add columns for remarks or anything you like. Then I copied that tab with one called ‘Willed To’. It took more thought and planning than I anticipated to decide who gets what, but far better to do it now while I’m still ‘of sound mind’, kinda. Now when I get a new one, I just insert on both tabs and it’s current in less than a minute.

Yes, I am anal and a bit too organized for most tastes, but you can sort or search easily and find what you need in no time. Multiple copies both digital and paper are a breeze.

Not to mention if you ever have a break in and theft, you have a great record for law enforcement or your insurance agent. Not that most will ever be recovered in that scenario, but even a few would make it painful for the offenders.

Thanks! No not yet, but I certainly will, we can admire them all day, but shooting them is a lot more fun.

Yep, I actually posted a request to Roy before it even got here, can’t wait to see who they shipped it to first. I’d been putting off lettering my Model 1, this was a good chance to do both.

I don't think that's anal. What works best for me - I just create a folder on my hard drive called "guns". In that folder are sub folders for each firearm. The folders are named: manufacturer, model, serial and DOM/ship date. Inside these folders are pictures, a copy of the ad if applicable, histories, documents, anything you like. I keep it backed up on a thumb drive.

As for leaving them after I'm no more, all my grandchild (five) are far too young so that just leaves my two daughters. That should make it easy to divide up. Yeah right!

Default Letter Received

Been a while, but these things take time. Thought some might be interested in the S&W letter from Roy on Baby Chief 12340.

Thanks to Roy’s Great service he provides free almost every day, I already knew the shipment month and year. What I didn’t know was this Baby Chief started its life as a Police firearm. IMHO no better start than that. I have many friends in Law Enforcement, and had I not decided on a career in the Navy, I would very likely have been an Officer myself, in fact I was accepted into the Tennessee State Trooper program just before I decided to re-enlist. I have the utmost respect for those who go in harms way to protect us each and every day.

Having said that, knowing this one went to Law Enforcement really brightened my day! It must have led a sheltered life in San Bernardino, or maybe it wound up with a staff member or politician...where it would have been as safe as a baby in his mother’s arms, especially a California politician. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist that one).

Congratulations Danny, that is one beautiful Baby Chief. I second the notion of presenting it to your Granddaughter someday. It will fit her hand better and it will be something very special the rest of her life that Grandpa gifted her.

Congratulations on getting yourself a Smooth Ramp Baby! Second only in rarity to the Half Penny front sight Baby, I’ve never even seen one of those in person.

Enjoy your new Baby Chief...and I second the motion, Pictures Please!

Welcome aboard from Wyo.

That's now the highest numbered smooth ramp Baby Chiefs in my database. I always like learning the new revisions to further the "corporate" knowledge.

As delcrossv said, please post it in a new thread with some photos.

Cheers
