Is there any pattern to K22 revolvers with the hard extraction? Is it the earlier or later 5-screws, 4 Screws or no particular pattern? Or when did it finally get solved?

I have had the same problem in four revolvers, a mix of each. Problem solved by reaming the cylinders. Check on the smithing forum, great information there.

I bought one at a gun show and sent it to S&W. It had minor wear problems. It is now flawless.

I have a 17-3 and was having extraction issues. Lightly polished the cylinders and no help. Figured out Winchester ammo is out of spec and Federal’s do just fine.

I am not having issues. I am wondering if there is a specific era to avoid or is just more prone to the stiff extraction. I have not experienced any extraction issues with the three K-22's I have owned.

Have had some loading as well as extraction problems w/ Remington. Winchester is no go loading. Excellent results w/ Champion, CCI, Aguila, Federal Automatch. Much better results w/ plated bullets rather than plain lead. Thorough cleaning of the cylinder and extractor star after a range session is required. HTH. Sincerely. bruce.

I confess that I have never had any extraction problems with my S&W 22 revolvers made between 1952 and 1977.

I have had, and remedied extraction on S&W Outdoorsman, (2) 5 Screws, Pre 18, 18-4, 17-4 and a 617-6. That pretty much spans 1930's to 2006.

Final solution, chambers reamed with Standard Finishing reamer.

Believe the issue spans the decades.
I did the finishing reamer treatment on what I called my '.21 caliber M63' and it is now absolutely perfect.
Though not as noticeable, I have a K22 (c.1952) and a M18 (c.1967) that will eventually also see the finish reamer. It just makes outings with shooting them so much less trouble.

Both my K-22s a masterpiece and combat 1952 shipped had to be finished reamed. Both were bad about stuck cases, didn't make any difference what ammo.

Yep, I get issues with the really cheap ****, but none with CCI standard or mini mags. One thing I noticed is that they got harder to extract after 50-60 shots, so I bring a small cleaning kit to the range and run a brush through each cylinder 1-2 times and good to go

Thanks for the replies. It appears to me that since it spans the decades and no one said earlier or later that it probably was using a reamer just a little too long before sharpening / discarding.

For the record I like to shoot standard velocity 40 grain lead bullets in my K-22 revolvers. CCI, Federal Target, Aguila Super Extra (blue/yellow box), and Winchester T-22. I never had a problem with any.

I don't like copper clad, plated, or whatever in my 22's, rifle or pistol for target shooting. Remington Thunderbolts, Winchester Wildcats, and similar may be fine for general plinking in a rifle, but just do not have the accuracy that I like on paper targets. I will use higher quality Rem or Win copper plated / coated Hollow Points for small game hunting with a rifle. I use my 357 Magnum as a hunting / backup gun, not my K-22!

My two extract just fine the belief is that as the factory made these they were a bit slow to replace worn reamers resulting in chambers that were just a bit undersized...

This worked for me. Money well spent.

Had the problem with a Taurus 22, it was horrible. A $60 reamer fixed it, I sold the Taurus for a good price. I would not have sold it in the previous condition. My K22 is just a bit tight, I have not chosen to ream it. But the job was easy.
