Gun Show Find: 44 Special
I have said it often that small town gun shows are the place to find treasures at a very reasonable cost. Its a matter of placing the right buyer with the right item and of coarse luck . I was told that this gun had floated the show for the last 3-4cycles at a much higher price, I paid $350 OTD with this one. All numbers match, bore and chambers show no signs of wear and are bright and shiney. Lockup is like a vault Note the eaglehead stamp in the yoke .Re- Finish is good without over buffing. This one will make a great addition to my collection of shooters.

Nice refinished Second Model. Should make a great shooter and you definitely purchased it at a reasonable price. Good going.

Yes, built on a 1917 frame between 1922 and 1927. Most of the 2nd models I have seen have been 6 1/2" nickel.
Is there a "B" on the underside of the barrel? If so, it was originally shipped with a blue finish.

Markings
Markings under the barrel were only the serial number, no B or N. There is a very small N on the left grip frame. The grips are MOP, not plastic. If the hammer and trigger were not plated it would look super.

Good for you, I'm a fan of the 2nd Model H.E. .44 Special. Not a big nickel fan but to each his own, for that price I think I could deal with a big shiny pistola. I agree that you got yourself an excellent shooter for a great price.

In that period, S&W did not normally use an N to denote the nickel finish. If the finish was blue, a B would be stamped on the barrel flat. If the finish was nickel, there would be no mark on the barrel flat, other than the serial number.
The conclusion is that your revolver was originally nickel plated, just not the nickel that is on it now.

I love this one. There's something cool about an old wheel gun that's been used, but not abused, and that shows the style of its day.
Congrats!

Serial Number Location
An interesting feature about this 2nd model is the location of the serial numbers. The Triple Lock has one of the numbers located on the 3rd locking lug. This gun has a serial number located on the yoke and my question is do all of the model 2s have one located there? See photo:

In my collection I have a 1921 shipped 2nd model 44HE in the rather scarce target model.
I have never seen a 44 HE with a Humpback hammer. It would have to be a 2nd model. Lots of talk these days about Humpback hammers making a certain revolver quite a bit more valuable. My 38-44 Outdoorsman is lettered with a Humpback hammer and prewar magna stocks. Is there a monetary increase for this gun with those options? Big Larry

Wolf & Klar
This S&W with the MOP grips seems to be a feature of W&K guns from the early times. I have seen them on both N frames and K frames. What is the time line for production of this innovated feature. I know the steer head with the red eyes is their classic but plain MOPs also show up. I was looking at 2nd model S&W 44s on GI and there are several that are identical to this one with plain MOP grips. Is there a serial number range for the 2nd model like the classic 3rd model. How many collectors have W&K 2nd models with MOPs and what is the S# range?
