Default 5 Screw pre 27

I’m looking for a 5 screw pre 27 .357. I came across one. 6“, with the wrong grips. ( ugly black). Otherwise good condition. Guy wants $1800. Does this sound high to anyone but me?
Thanks.

That's a very tough call to make without photos. Early this year I was at a show and found a pre Model 29 with a scope base and rings mounted, no rear sight, box or tools. It did have a nice pair of "cokes" on it. The ask was $2495. I offered exactly half and left with the gun.

6” is one of the more common barrel lengths and the non-original stocks are a minus for value. Depending on the exact condition I would offer half of the asking price and wouldn’t be surprised if it is accepted.

Why make an offer on a gun you dont like, unless the Cokes would clean up? More like a $1300 gun.

I won the one in the below pictures back in July of this year at a live auction. As you can see it came with plastic grips which was later corrected. It is vintage 1950 with a 3 & 1/2" barrel.

My winning bid was $800.00 plus a buyer's premium of $80.00. I would rate it at between 85 to 90% appearance condition. Otherwise, it is in perfect mechanical condition.

My personal limit on a gun like you described would be $800.

For a 6” Pre-27 $1800 would be about right for a mint gun in the original box with matching grips and all paperwork and tools.

Are you looking for a particular barrel length?

I don't have anything for sale just curious.

The 3 1/2" is a desirable barrel length, which adds value. The wrong grips subtract value. A 95% shooter with incorrect grips would probably bring $800 to $900 in the Midwest.

This one cost me quite a bit less, but I bought it in 1993. It normally wears non-relieved diamond targets it came with.

This my 4" pre-27, a special order shipped to the Chicago based H.H. Harris Co in 1957.

It’s supposedly in “as new” condition. No box or papers, and the grips look like Mershon?

I lucked into my 4". I think there were only about 24 pre-27 4" made, all special orders.

I wasn't looking for one and then one day a good friend said, "hey Kenny, look at this......... I'm going to sell it".

LOL So I bought it. I did want a 4" M27 and was hoping to find a no-dash but there was no way I could pass up that 5-screw pre-27.

The 3.5”er Pre-27’s are available on the popular online gun auction and sales sites on a fairly regular basis - much more so than the 4”ers. The 3.5”ers are very popular but were apparently made in significant quantities as they are not rare like the 4”ers. I think you should be able to find a nice shooter (say 95% - 97% condition) 3.5” for $2K or less. I got my 3.5” Pre-27 shooter pictured below for under $1800 from a fellow member who advertised it here on the Forum within the last year.

I knew I was paying a little too much for my 6.5" pre-27 (~$950 with incorrect S&W grips), but an extremely nasty dirty revolver cleaned up well, I found appropriate S&W targets and it ended up being my most accurate and favorite .357, and still is. If you aren't worried about selling it, paying a little too much won't concern you in the long run.

My 1960 6.5" M27 is probably my favorite 27.

I recently had to pass on a really nice 5" pre-27. I have a 5" M27-2 and that's going to have to suffice as my 5" 27 for a while.

I'm sure you'll be sharing pictures.

Not sure where you guys are finding 95%, 3.5” pre 27s for $800 -$900, but it ain’t in my neck of the woods.

Got a grip question. If I wanted to change grips for carry purposes, what can you guys recommend? First it’s a square butt, right? Combat grips? I have large hands, and need a comfortable grip. Thanks!

Bill Jordan had some huge mitts. As a result Jordan Trooper stocks are pretty big. They might work for you.

Thanks, I think he had the same size mitts. I’m nowhere near his class though.

Nice looking Pre-27! Worthy of some diamond magna or diamond target stocks.

Thanks, brother! I’m thinking Jordan troopers.
Oh, don’t be thrown by the oil on the surface photographing as a bad finish. It looks flawless in person.

Sandy Garrett checked it out this morning. He told me it had been in and out of a holster a couple times, but had never been fired.

Pure luck. Not cheap, but it’s a 53 year old new gun.

I'd be comfortable for half that price. There is a large selection of random plastic/rubber grips from the era. I am a big fan of original grips, I hate buying stuff with the wrong grips.................doesn't mean I won't do it.

Just put my order in to Herretts for Jordan trooper grips, oil finish with the finger grooves. After I traced my hand on the paper, I realized that it barely fit the 81/2x11” sheet! Can’t wait to get them on.
