Reassembly
I received the missing ejector rod for my 32-1. When I attempt to insert the extractor into the cylinder I can feel the spring compress and the extractor goes in, but not all the way to seat on the two pins. My question is, is the extractor spring just stuck in the cylinder and not allowing the extractor to seat. Would it just need a good soaking and some gentle persuasion or is there another issue here.
Also for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get a picture on here. Thanks in advance for help/advice.

Dave,
Cleaning out everything first is the first thing to do.
Does everything go together correctly with the large spring left out? The extractor star seats properly on the pins and the new extractor rod is not to long for cyl to close?
If everything fits, next check the ends of the spring to make sure they're round and not bent egg shaped so they slip over the extractor star shaft easily.

Everything appears to be the right length. The large extractor spring is still in the cylinder and seems to be stuck there. I haven"t tried to remove it. I believe the gas seal and the bushing on the other end are in there also.

The spring should fall out of the cyl so if it's stuck in there, address that issue before going any further, that could be the problem.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. This is my first experience with a S&W. I have worked on Colts and Rugers before, but wanted to be sure that the spring wasn't a press fit or held in by the gas seal or the bushing . Again Thanks

How to post pictures.
Best of luck! It's really quite simple.

First the star extractor goes in the back of the cyl,
Then the ctr pin with small spring goes into the front of the cyl,
Then the large spring, then the little bushing that looks like a top hat goes over the ctr pin with the small diameter into the top of the large spring,
Then the extractor rod goes over the ctr pin. Thread it all the way in tight w/o installing the yoke for the moment. The ctr pin should be flush with the end of the front of the ext rod or stick out slightly.
Install cyl assembly in the frame and gently lock into place with the locking bolt in the barrel lug.
If that all works, now install the yoke and check again.

Oh wait, I just recalled that your ext rod has no knob on the front end of the extractor rod, just a knurled tip. Therefore you may not have a separate collar bushing, the collar could be integral with the rod.
If the extractor rod you purchased is too long, when you assemble it into the yoke and the yoke in the gun, it will push the extractor star out the back and the cyl can't close.
What's the barrel length and the over all length of the rod you purchased?
If the collar is separate from the rod, does it look like this?
Or like this?

Finally managed to get a picture on here. To answer your queries: The barrel is 3", the extractor rod I purchased is 2-1/2", the small rod with the little spring is 3-5/16". The bushing looks like the lower of the two pictures or like a small top hat. Currently, when I attempt to screw the extractor rod in, it won't slide into the yoke. Did I get the wrong extractor rod ? Thanks again.

1. The extractor rod is too long. It should be: 2 7/16". Double check your measurement, measurements need to be precise. You have a J frame and the rod diameter should be .225" to fit in the hole in the yoke. You likely have a K frame rod if it's too large to fit the yoke.
When you order your parts ask the person to check the dimensions before you place order.
2. The collar bushing should be this one:
However, with the correct length rod you can use the collar you have if you install it backwards from the way I described in my post #7 above.
3. Your ctr pin measurement is too short, the proper length is 3 7/16".

Okay, and Merry Christmas to all !
Rain finally stopped and found time to do some measurements. These were done with my machinist's scale and a caliper so should be ok. The extractor length is 2-7/16", the diameter measured .218. The small rod is
3-5/16" The bore of the crane is also .218, so the extractor won't fit into the crane. I assembled the extractor without the crane and it appears to be too long to fit in the gun. This gun was found in a cabinet a friend of mine bought, along with a Sterling .25acp. Again your help and advice is appreciated. The center rod in the picture is just laying there for display purposes, I realize it goes in the opposite way

Finally together
After much cleaning, and finagling the gun is finally together and functions properly. Again, thanks to those who gave me advice and a source for parts etc.
