Default Help ID 5-Screw .38 Spl 4" C-prefix

As I was told a couple of years back, these would become addicting. I've come across another .38 Special with no model number. Serial is C335606 (sadly grip serial doesn't match). It has 4" barrel, no patent info on barrel top as some do, and left side of frame is completely blank.

Thanks again in advance and happy holidays!

Dave

Your revolver is likely from the early to mid 50's. Stocks look to be from the 20's. Could have had either sharp or soft shoulder Magnas originally. I have spares if you need a set, PM me.

Yes. .38 Military & Police. Probably shipped in 1955, maybe 1956.

Patent dates on the barrel disappeared about the same time that the C prefix started. I'm not aware of any M&Ps from the 1950s with the dates on the top of the barrel. If there were any, they'd be scarce.

The stocks are from the 1920-1929 period and are in very nice shape. They are probably worth more than the Magna type that came on the gun. This gun would have shipped with diamond PC Magna stocks, having the soft top shoulder and the rounded edges at the bottom.

Anyway, you picked up a pretty nice example from the period. It should be a fun shooter.

It's a .38 Military & Police, from about 1955. It has the more highly polished blue finish compared to guns of earlier in the decade. Enjoy!

FWIW, I own C 237356 that shipped 1-4-1954 to J.W. Phillips however mine in an air weight with a 2" barrel. My earliest C prefix is C 2077 that shipped in November of 1948. C 46336 shipped in January of 1949, C 84786 shipped in August 1949 and C 153239 shipped in March of 1951.

I don't know why anyone would claim that collecting these would become addicting.......

Default .38 M&P became the Model 10

Your M&P predates the S&W convention of naming models. However, the .38 M&P would become the very famous Model 10 in 1957. The 4" bbl versions of this K-frame were very popular with law enforcement and security personnel, so there are lots of them out there in various conditions.
