Default the accuracy of my high patrolman

the 357 is one of my favorite handgun calibers. I took this one out today. I haven't shot it in a couple of years. I have been selling off a few guns that I just don't use and this is one of them. a friend of mine wants to buy it, I pulled it out and went outside to my range. this is 6 shots at 12 long steps off hand single action. my handload of 160gr. RCBS SWC cast from WW 13gr. of #2400 the gun is a first year highway patrol 6in barrel. I also have a 4in. I made a mistake of shooting it again. I will stay here a while longer, but I have to find some stocks,,,,,,,,,,,

If it shoot that good like it is, I wouldn't change a thing! You made a wise choice to keep it.

It earned some nice Target Stocks and an affectionate rub down with an oily rag.

I'm tempted by a, putting it politely, shooter grade grade 6" 28-2 that a local store has for a less than internet price. I need it like a hole in the head. You're not helping.

I wonder if you could do that with another set of grips, I'm not so sure.
Pretty impressive!

Of course we are not helping.

No one needs a hole in the head(some deserve it though).

But any selfrespecting shooter, S & W aficionado, or just handgun guy. Needs at least one model 28.

A good number of years ago I made it my own personal policy to take any firearm I was thinking of selling to the range one last time.
It's provided a great incentive not to sell most of them.

If you are selling the 6" I would attach the 9 of hearts to the price tag and increase the price accordingly. You can't buy perfection ... oh, wait, yes you can. For a price!

I could not sell mine, also first year production.
Those of you who do not have one, you would be hard pressed to spend your money more wisely.

The question is whether a man who already has two of each barrel length needs a cosmetic beater just because it's $385. It's funny how beaters launch more lead than beauty queens.

I wouldn't know. I buy my guns nice and keep them that way. No "truck" or "beater" guns here

But they shoot as good as they look.

I've owned three M-27's and two M-28's. They all shot about like the OP's gun and would group Remington 158 grain .357 soft point and HP ammo with all six holes cutting one another at 25 yards. I shot that weli with two Pythons, too, but no better.

My brother bought this one new in 1978.

I was the first one to shoot it when he let me take it rabbit hunting. It was still wearing the Magna stocks the first few times I took it.

He added these Pachmayr grips and said they were better suited for what I was using for.

I kept that gun for several years until I moved out of state and he didn't want me to take it with me.

I've shot 1000's or .357 rounds thru that gun hunting rabbits. I've killed far more that were on the run than standing still. We used to hunt rabbits 2-3 times a week, one or more nights with spotlights.

Back in Aug 2014 my brother gave it to me. He said it should be mine because I was the only one who had ever shot it.

It has spent its entire life in this holster. It now wears a nice set of Targets and resides on my night stand.

I still have the original Magnas and the Pachmayrs that it was wearing when he gave it to me.

Up until the last year or two I've never done any target shooting, its all been hunting varmints.

That was or is the beauty of Model 28s. They shot as accurately as the most expensive revolvers. Their low recoil made it easier to demonstrate that.

I always shot .357 reloads from my brother and he liked them on the warm side.

I shot rabbits with one had double action as they were on the run.

I usually nailed them by the 3rd round. Sometimes I'd squeeze off all six and they just kept on a running.

That was a lot of years ago. Today I'm thrilled that the bullet hits anything. LOL

The Highway Patrolman is a terrific revolver. Here is my 1954 example.

My first Model 28 belonged to my dad. My mom gave it me after he died. 6" barrel, N prefix, -2.

About 10 years ago I bought another M28-2, but this one had a 4" barrel.

These are among my very favorite guns.

That's a good point. In my case, I try to buy the best condition I can find. And whatever I buy I shoot, and take care of. So in that particular case, I would not buy a beater.

I like shorter barrels and I hate rubber grips. If you told me the gun's accuracy improved when you put the long barrel and the rubber grips on it I would ask "How much did it improve?" If you showed me that playing card I would not care about the before picture, I would say, "You did the right thing!" So despite the long barrel and the rubber grips that is a very special gun.

I came into firearms in the late 70s, a time when serious shooters usually dumped wood grips for rubber as soon as they could. This was especially true in LE. To this day, I loathe wood grips and would not have them on any revolver I intend to carry. They simply don't work as well for most purposes that matter. I would not change a thing on this HP - it works great just as it is.

Default beautiful utility guns...doesn't get much better

I've got M-27's, pre-27 and a 4 inch Highway Patrolman. All very good, accurate shooters and lookers too. Got to say though, the Highway Patrolman is simply iconic....invented for LEO duty, plainer than its commercial cousins, but a real honest to goodness "go to" gun for duty, carry (in the days), strength, accuracy.

Mine is 1974, above middle of it's whole run (1954 to 1986) but still a range day favorite, especially running 38's.

I'm lucky that I can shoot my 28 and land on the target these days, so I'm certainly never going to give the OP a run for his money with his shooting of that playing card....but I'd bet MY 28 in HIS hands could maybe do the same shot!

Of course we haven't heard from Pete (Narraganset) yet. Last I saw from his posts...it looks like he has cornered the market on Model 28's
