The problem with being born in 1962 is that most S&W's shipped that year are -1's. That makes them cost more. I have seen several over the years that I couldn't bring myself to pay the extra '-1' premium.

This one surfaced just before Christmas and I had to have it. It shipped 39 days before I was born. It's as close to mint condition as any S&W I own.

I figure I'll have to sit on it for quite a while to recoup the cost but as they say, "you only live once"! I now understand where all of the "Can you believe what this Model XX just sold at auction for?" threads come from.

Just think of the cost as a tax for being young. Something most of us would gladly pay.

If you are going to devote time, effort, and finances to getting a significant gun, it is appropriate to get a really nice one. IMHO, you have hit the proverbial home run, and although the temporary hit to your wallet will fade in significance, your pride in owning that special gun is likely to continue to grow. Congratulations.

In my studied opinion, there are no bad pre- or Model 17s (certainly none from about the ‘70s back.) Of all the gun terms applied to various models, the term, “Masterpiece” is most accurate and appropriate. I know mine have given me many hours of pleasure.

Very nice birth year gun indeed. Now the bad part is in trying to put together the "birth year trifecta" although a 14-1 could be found a 16-1 is less likely and may be none that exist. A model 16 would suffice to complete the set if it was me- but my wallet would strongly object. Anyhow you have a real treasure to cherish. Enjoy

This one actually recompleted my trifecta in a way. I sold my ‘52 K22 to a guy with a ten year old son who thought it was the coolest .22 he had ever seen in his ten years. I coudn’t turn down his offer. It was fairly finished-challenged an I just thought I could easily replace it. Four years later I hadn’t found a suitable replacement.

The ‘48 K38 and ‘53 K32 now have a new baby brother. I’ll get a family photo ASAP.

As the years roll by I can really appreciate this sentiment.

That’s a beautiful 17, and IMHO a sweeter shooting 22 hasn’t been built, I love mine.

Still looking for my 1950 birth gun, it’s out there, just haven’t bought it yet...but I will, Good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise.
