Default dry firing a model 17-1

I have heard numerous times that you are not to dry fire a S&W 22 revolver. If I put spent shells into it, would it then be safe to dry fire?

Thanks in advance for the info .

yes, the brass will soften the blow of the hammer falling. They make aluminum .22 caliber snap caps for this purpose as well. I would recommend these over spent cases to prevent mix ups.
